Re: Effect of overheating on big end bearings

Thanks for the replies.

Remember seeing a vid of a Mk1 that was deliberately run at the rev limiter with no coolant in it. It lasted something like 5 or 6 minutes before it let go (quite spectacularly).

Re: anyone running or know what standard boost should be?

Mine (Rev 2) was running only 7 psi or so. Checked error codes, T-VSV operation and the integrity of all the hoses from turbo through i/c to throttle body. It turned out to be leaking boost through a dirty and poorly installed BOV. Took the BOV apart, cleaned all parts in Avgas and re-installed it w...

Re: Effect of overheating on big end bearings

Thanks for the reply Ian. I'd heard that prolonged engine overheating can cause big end bearing failure, I would guess due to the shells softening?? Pistons seizing in the bores is the worst case scenario, but managed to avoid that! The rest of the cooling system on the car is good. The car was orig...

Effect of overheating on big end bearings

Hi folks Head gasket's gone on my Rev 2 turbo. The car began to overheat, didn't have anywhere safe to stop the car, and ended up running it with the temp needle at the top of the gauge for a couple of minutes. ECU light lit on the dash about 30 secs before I could stop the car and shut the engine o...

Re: [Mk2 NA] blown head gasket???

My Rev 2 turbo was overheating on boost and blowing bubbles in the coolant. No steam in the exhaust or mayo in the oil. Was going to get a sniff test done to confirm exhaust gas in the coolant but hit on the idea of buying a £5 CO detector from Homebase and clamping that over the open coolant filler...

Re: Why has the Toyota MR2 not evolved into the mk4?

As has been mentioned, the major chunk of first-owner soft-top 2-seat sports cars are bought by people who are far more interested in being flash as opposed to having power/weight or chassis dynamics. Therefore MR2 as previously known is dead. I've never driven a Mk3. However, I thought the Mk1 was ...

Stick me down as a reserve as well, please. I'm happy to pay up in advance to secure a place if enough people drop out.

Re: Why are there so many black mk2's?

Black is an 'unpopular' colour in Japan, and so a lot of grey import performance cars here turn out to be black...

The Japs go nuts for white cars, being the national racing colour.

Sanchi

Who are you getting to do the insurance on your N/A MR2 with the turbo engine transplant? I would have thought that the premium would be at least as high if not higher then insuring a stock MR2 turbo anyway???

Re: headgasket on my tubby why ???????

White exhaust 'smoke' is steam due to coolant entering cylinders through HG leak.

Have you done a hydrocarbon 'sniff test' on the coolant with an emissions tester? Worth doing before you pay for the head to come off...

Re: no engine temp

Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, but I take it the connector hasn't come away from the sensor. Mine does this occasionally, I've had to cable-tie it on. Replaced my sensor a while ago anyway, it's a 5 minute job! Got the part for £15 or something like that. Be aware that the MR2 has 2 separat...

Re: want a ferarri

What kind of inbred freaks stick 'turbo' badges on the back of non-performance cars? Who are they trying to kid? Themselves? I've seen clapped-out Cavaliers with plastic wheels and 'turbo' decals bought from Halfords for £1.99 crudely stuck onto the tailgate. I assume they are trying to be ironic?

Re: want a ferarri

Err, in exactly what way is this supposed to resemble an F355? It's so obviously still an MR2 the whole effort was pointless. It's got 11 Ferrari badges on it though, folks, so that makes all the difference...

I'm off to stick some Zonda badges on my 2.

Fabulous. Another moron who dipped his car in glue and then drove it through Halfords.

He wants a swap for his 1990 MR-Shed. "Please do not offer 15 year-old bangers you know what I mean"... Not even a hint of irony... :D

I take it you've tried jump/boost starting it in case of the old low battery/fecked alternator scenario?

Re: Rev 1 turbo - Ignition timing and detonation...

MR2lover Soz mate, but if you look at the BGB schematic for the T-VSV wiring the ECU trigger signal (TPC) is +12v for T-VSV off and 0v for T-VSV on. The other terminal on the T-VSV is permanently at +12v, so the solenoid only operates when the ECU signal goes to 0v. To get an LED to light when the T...

Re: Rev 1 turbo - Ignition timing and detonation...

BenF, Took the hose off the T-VSV purely to see if the boost was being T-VSV limited. Ran it at full throttle only for a few seconds to confirm 10 psi on my Greddy boost gauge. With T-VSV connected I was getting 7 psi. Only ran it with the hose off at full throttle for a few seconds to check the tur...

Re: Rev 1 turbo - Ignition timing and detonation...

Thanks for the replies

The car is in safe mode in as far as the ECU is restricting the boost by not triggering the T-VSV. I have performed several ECU resets to no avail.

MR2_Rich, cheers for the link. I'll have another go at checking timing tonight.

Rev 1 turbo - Ignition timing and detonation...

Hi, hope someone can help... Bought a rev 1 turbo from a mate, only mods are K+N induction, s/s decat exhaust, BOV. No form of aftermarket boost control. He had the car dyno'd at 230 bhp at the fly. The car boosted smoothly up to the '+' mark on the boost gauge. After he had it a while the indicated...
