Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, but I take it the connector hasn't come away from the sensor. Mine does this occasionally, I've had to cable-tie it on. Replaced my sensor a while ago anyway, it's a 5 minute job! Got the part for £15 or something like that. Be aware that the MR2 has 2 separate coolant temp sensors, one for the guage and one for the ECU. They are quite close to one another, located on a metal coolant pipe block exiting the left of the engine between the distributor and recirc. valve. The forward (green) sensor is the ECU temp sensor. At the rear of the pipe you'll find the smaller brass coloured guage temp sensor. Just unscrew it and replace.

I payed just £2 for my temp sensor from my local factor. This is the little unscrewable sensor and it was deff for the temp gauge as I had the same problem.

When you do it make sure the car is cold as you will lose a bit of water when changeing it.

The one you are wanting to change is the one with the blue plasitc on it.

Hope this helps
