More for the Scots...

Post by Urban Assault Vehicle »

Hi guys,

I've noticed there are a few Scots using the forum.

Can any of you tell me of reputable garages in Scotland, more preferably the West Lothian area that would do a timing belt and other bits and pieces in that area of the engine? What price did you pay?

No doubt some of you have had this done so any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers

Hi mate, I stay in West Lothian and I'd recommend Hypertech in Bonnybridge. They're a Japanese Specialist and regularly work on Mr2's. Ive been going round there for more than 2 years now and have had no problems. Haven't had the timing belt done on my Mr2 yet, so i cant help out with a price. If you fancy trying them out you can give em a call on 01324 812212 and ask for Duncan. Just had Teins , ARB's and struts fitted by them, and im more than happy with the install. Here is their website too http://www.hypertechscotland.co.uk/home.htm

I know Calder motors is probably closer for you, but i'd stay away from there , I've head too many horror stories about em. They're a definate no no.

Cheers

No, they dont do 4 wheel alignment, but the garage round the corner from them does. When i got my Teins installed, they took it round the corner and got it done for me. So, if your plannin something similar, they will arrange the alignment for you as part of their install. Ill have a rumage through my reciepts and find the name of the other garage for you.

You have heard horror stories about Calder motors as in CRD? The people who built one of the most powerfull MR2's at the time? Are these horror stories coming from competitors cos i haven't heard of one single complaint, they know the car inside out.

I won't be going back to them but thats for personal reasons that have nothing to do with the job they did or work they do. I got my timing belt and clutch changed for £420. They would usually charge around 350 i reckon for just the timing belt (i supplied my own clutch).

If your thinking of getting a clutch done in the near future you might as well get it done at the same time. Saves you a few hundered squid.

Hi Scott, i am talking about CRD. I agree thats a very fair price for the work you've had done and im glad you're happy with what was carried out. But i have been told by countless others to give em a wide berth. The general concensus i got was to stay away. With regards to their high powered cars, i have been told most of the mods are already on the cars when they import em, and to me that dosnt qualify as having built em. A couple of years back I looked into buying a modified tubbie from their forecourt. When the car came off the boat it wouldnt start. Each week i phoned to see how they were getting on with the car and was told it was only an elictrical fault soon to be remedied. Needless to say i never saw the car running and didnt buy it. Turns out it had a wrecked cam. It makes me dubious about their "we only import grade 4.5+ cars" claims, considering i never got to see the jap auction report. Anyhow in the last couple of months ive since seen that car again, and this time it was in getting fixed in Hypertech in Bonnybridge. Apparently the car has had plenty of major problems for the owner since purchasing it.(maybe the owner is a member and can enlighten us?) To sum it all up, I can only make decisions based on what ive heard, and it aint good. Maybe Calder are perfectly fine, but im not going to take a chance on em. I knew someone would come in to defend CRD, so ill make it clear, im not looking for a big "CRD are great" argument, just offering an honest opinion based on what ive heard and my experience with em.

cheers

pro-grip are the garage that duncan at hypertech use for the wheel alignment, john is the guy who owns pro-grip he's a good and helpfull guy. i agree duncan is a good guy who knows his stuff and his work is top notch with good prices to boot. the only thing that lets him down is the fact that he hardly ever phones you back and your always left chasing him rather than him calling you to let you know how things are going etc. my car has been up there to get a few suspension problems sorted out that were my own doing and i haven't got any complaints, other than having to take my bumper off to get the car on his ramp and also to get the wheel alignment done as the car is too low

CRD, that is where i bought my car a little over a year ago now, and since having it i've had 1 problem and it was ignition related took the car back to them and got new dizzy, rotor arm, plugs, leads replaced with parts of my choice straight away. also had the car serviced there, as well as having a few other little bits done and i also cant say a bad word about them either. but that is only my personal experience with them.

if it was me i would go to duncan and the ONLY reason for that is the fact that his garage is a 2 minute drive from my house.

Cheers for the replies guys.

I'm in 2 minds whether to get the belts etc done or buy a nice set of wheels! Common sense and experience tells me to get the mechanical work done first!

I'll give Hypertech a call and see what they're saying.

As for CRD, I must admit, I've heard a few horror stories too. I've been up a few times before buying my car to look at their stock and always found them sitting in quite a shabby state. Just my 2p's worth though.

Cheers,
G.
