3S - Wrecked my engine - Image aware..

Post by J3OOSST »

I had James from 3S rebuild my engine at a cost of 3k in 2005. After 900 miles of driving it like a retired blind grandad, yes that gently ! I was at a car show and was cleaning the car while it ticked over.. a friend moved it for me so another could be positioned on the stand and we all heard a screeching sound, bit like the belt in the wet.. anyway, he started to reverse it in and at 4000rpm the whole *bleep* engine exploded, spat the pistons and conrods out through the sump ! Something every engineer said was just not possibly at 4000rpm and I agreed, but I was there as were 20 others at the time.

I called James straight away and he said i must have been on the motorway at high revs for it to happen, thank *bleep* i wasnt personally.

He insisted on his garage looking at it and obviously i agreed.. so had the AA drop it down that night.. 3 days later i was told, nothing wrong, had to be me.. when i had the car recovered from his garage and looked at by another engineer, they said the way 3S had stripped the engine out and bits were also missing, it was now impossible to pinpoint what happened..

Since then, staff having left admitted to me, it was covered up and i was shafted by James..

I have all the pictures, video etc and witnesses from the day, but it was useless after the engineer said they had stripped and destroyed any and all evidence of what went wrong.. so, there you have my experience of 3S..

I did everything required including having the oil change done at a local garage,I admit it was after roughly 70 miles and not 50, but thats roughly the distance i had to drive back anyway after initially picking my car up.

To this day I have never recieved a pennie of compensation nor have I have I ever been offered a replacement for what was destroyed.

This is where it actually happened, as you can see, the claims by 3S that I must have been driving at high speed for the damage to have occurred, seems somewhat impossibly in the place the engine blew. You can see the oil on the grass etc including one guy picking bits up at one point..

When I picked my car up from 3S these are the pictures of what they left after stripping the engine out to cover thier own tracks.

My advice, think long and hard before going anywhere near 3S for any work what so ever, because if it goes wrong, well, you decide .. because this is what I had and loved before 3S..

I would love to be able to turn round one day and say 3S did the decent thing and came to an arrangment over all this, but sadly, since it happened in 2005 and its now 3 years on..

Mate, what did the rebuild entail? On your bill it says nothing about
a rebuild only fitting of turbo, intercooler etc and cleaning of oil
cooler. Would have thought you would have noticed something was
wrong in !000 miles.

I was instructed by 3S not to take the car over 4000rpm for a minimum of 1000 miles and that was to run it in basically. They had stripped the engine right down installing new rings etc etc.. i honestly cannot recall all the stuff now. there has been a lot of guessing as to what could have happened #-o

Blimey that has indeed stuck a leg out of bed...

Does sound very much like what happened when my old engine went and that was due to the cam belt becoming loose and jumping a fair few teeth.

Have you had a look at the cam belt?

BTW at 3000rpm the above can happen, Yes at 7000rpm is will make more of a mess and probably put the piston in the chassis but the energy in an engine at fast idle is enough to bend things if things are not right.

Bloody nora

Cr to you for waiting so long to "try" and sort out with 3S. Many would have named and shamed a lot earlier.. but i guess you are at the end of your teather esp if the company just washes it's hands.

YOU ONLY FIND OUT HOW GOOD A COMPANY IS WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG. no matter who's fault it is.

I've see a lot of replies on here from 3S (james is it?) who comes across immensely defensive right from the outset. I appreciate he's defending his reputation.. but you live and die by your reputation - both from the "work" and the "attitude".

I would always look at how problems are rectified with a company rather than beleive all the hype from "chums"

I feel for you my friend, you waited a long time obviously but in the end had to vent your frustration and to warn others of your Experience of said company - you are perfectly entitled to do that - i don't blame you - I'm sure you had given 3S every opportunity over the past 3 years

Lets hope they have bucked their ideas up since this work was carried out and they have learned from their mistakes - be that workmanship (still debateable if they wont own up to anything) .. but certainly their attitude).

The friend reversing the car in for me, reved it to 4000rpm while sitting still to see if the screeching noise stopped, and it was then the engine went in such a dramatic manner.
3S had put new rings in etc and done various other work all paid for, but i never recieved a reciept once this occurred for much of the work.

I am hoping this thtread is allowed to continue and be discussed, it has been LOCKED out on MR2OC, I suspect only because of who is close friends of 3S [-X

Is that it James, is that the answer you came up with ? I was banned, yes and if you recall, i was banned for stupid reasons, something you yourself stated on the forums at the time, defending me, or did you forget that fact.
I have gone about this in an adult manner, i have presented the facts. Would you like to discuss this with a view to settling the matter at last ?

Mike - can you please deal with this off the forum. Get in contact with James and sort this out as far as you can in person.

Everyone else, this is being locked for the time being pending further information. Feedback threads are for the company concerned and the consumer/client - unless you were involved in this incident and have full facts (that as far as I'm aware are only available to James and Mike), please stay out of it.
