[Mk2] [NA] New ICE install progress

Post by No_more_GT4 »

Evening folks,
Over the last couple of days I've been prepping my doors with the labourious task of Dynamatting :| so thought I'd start a post to let you know how the install progress is going :D

I've finished Dynamatting the door skins as you can see. Should I bother doing the rear side of the outer metal part of the doors :?:

When I had my GT4, I covered the door skins & also covered the rear side of the door plastics. Should I bother doing that this time around :?:

I received my Alpine CDE 9882Ri headunit today :D & cant wait to fit it.

The rest of the ICE is JL Audio, comprising of a W3V3 10" sub, a set of XR650-csi components & an A series A4300 amp. I kinda wish I had gone for one of the slash series amps, but it was $100 over my budget I had set myself. Can't complain though with the stuff I bought myself, very chuffed indeed

Now where would you suggest to place the amp :?: I'm kinda keen on mounting it behind the drivers seat. Who's done this in their car & have you got any pictures to show me exactly how you've done it :?:

I'll keep updating this thread to show you how it's going, but it may take me some time as I'm now back to work from tomorrow for 7 shifts

Glad to see someone doing things properly, and going to the time and effort to put some decent sound deadening.

If it was me I'd definately do the inside of the outer door skin. I was always taught that you should sound-deaden this part first, as its the biggest sheet of flat metal in the door, and therefore the most prone to vibrations.

Same here. i pulled all the interior out and have placed deadening on the floor, behind the seats. door skins, centre tunnel. even small sections do wonders to dampen noise. and the difference it makes to give decent speakers a solid platform to work from.

I am starting to dynamat my mr2 soon, so it's good to see how others are doing the same thing :D. I have 1 and a half (~5m2) packets of dynamat bought for my project so I think that should be enough...

The progress is looking good here, but I have heard that it would be best to cover all the holes in the door also with dynamat? That would really makes any servicing on the door impossible or very hard atleast so is there really any point in going that way for the extra dampening. I was also thinking about putting some mat on the inside of the door to dampen the outer side of the door also. Does that make any sense to anyone :D.. all comments are welcome ;).

Would be nice to see more pictures of your progress with this :thumleft: .

me personally i would of thought that putting dynamat on the door skin wouldn't be that detrimental to the sound i would of though you would get a lot better sound if you where to dynamat behind the dore skin behind the speaker :thumleft: as then the speaker has something to bounch of rather than losing the sound through the dore itself, well this is what i did to my mr2 and it gratefully improved my sounds \:D/ hope this helps you matey :thumleft:

Yeah I'm Dynamatting behind the door speaker today. I should really rip out the whole interior & Dynamat the floor, firewall, rear 1/4 pannels & the doors. But just doing the door well enough will be good enough for me.

I just remember Dynamatting the doors on my GT4 & the places I didn't Dynamat (like the curved section of the door cards where the door lock pops up from) rattled & vibrated & that was with just the JL door speakers in there #-o

Right, bit of an update & progress report.

I originally wanted to mount the amp behind the drivers seat, but it's such a small place to put the amp  I struggled about behind the drivers seat for the best part of an hour & then I gave up

So I resorted to placing the amp in the frunk. Now I had to decide to keep the spare wheel or not. If I did keep it, I would have to design it so if I needed to get to the wheel, it would come out with ease. The spare wheel went in the end   & in place is this.

It's not wired up yet, but you get the idea. I'm not too happy with the semi-circle bit of material above the amp as it's just kind of sitting there so I can have easy access to the battery.

I've taken the stock tweeters out & thought 'Great. I can use the stock tweeter mounting brackets for my new tweerers'. Oh how wrong was I. But the new tweeters slotted nicely into the covers with a bit of modification to the covers themselves.

A bit of sanding down to the 6 plactic sections protuding from the outer edge of the tweeter cover saw the new tweeters snugly home. I've put a bit of glue in there just in case, but it's pretty secure. I stuck left over trimmings of Dynamat to the rear of the tweeters. Not too sure if this will have any effect whatsoever, but, what the heck. Live dangerously I say

Not a bad fit if I do say so myself :thumleft:

Now onto the doors. I bought another roll of Dynamat & covered the areas directly behind the door speakers & along the rest of the door itself.
I had to knock up a couple of spacer rings for the 6.5" door speakers & they're now finally in, but nothing is wired up. The rear of the speaker grill plastic had to be trimmed back to allow for the increased speaker size.

Thats about it for now. I just have to wire it all up & put it back together now :thumleft:

Any comments or ideas, positive & negative, are most welcome.

Cheers

You mean spacer rings, right :?: :? If the model of rings are the correct fitment for the make of car, then I don't see why they wouldn't fit.

If you want to make your own out of wood, then you should have a spacer ring stencil on your speaker box, well, I did on mine anyway.

Do I really need to explain to you how to cut a hole out of MDF :?:

If you don't fancy cutting your own rings out of MDF then have a look on here:

http://www.auto-acoustics.co.uk/mdf-spe ... -319-p.asp

I'm not too sure if they are the cheapest out there, but I'm sure there are a bunch of these MDF speaker spacers on Ebay :thumleft:

Hope this helps :?: :D
