Fell off horse....got back on! [new tubby at last]

Post by mattcambs »

Hi Guys :D

Bought a new tubby, finally! Here it is:

Image

Mods:
HKS air filter
HKS SSQV
HKS boost gauge
HKS turbo timer
HKS Turbo exhaust
Cusco front and rear strut braces
Tein HA coilovers (stock top mounts)
Bomex front bumper (the oval lights are wired in as the side lights - don't know why as they look sh1te)
BK racing 17in alloys (7in front and back - gonna sell these and put my staggered Sparco 16s on)

Problems to sort:
Thermostat is stuck open - Rogue are sorting this on Tuesday

The body has had a full respray, but is in need of a good machine polish (been getting awesome advice from JOHN400 on this). Also, I want to paint a few stone chips in, but the paintwork seems lighter/brighter than the original red (inside frunk for eg), therefore I'm not sure that Super Red 2 will be a great match. Any thoughts?

The tinting on the rear window has bubbled BADLY! Not really sure how to sort this - might just take it to an expert as I assume I could damage the de-mister wires if I just pull/scrape it off?

I need your advice on the Tein HA coilovers. I can't find any instruction guide for these on Tein's site. I just want to know how to set the damping, i.e which direction, etc, to twist the adjustment know.

Wow, it's nice to have a stock gearbox and LSD after my last tubby's close ratio box and mechanical LSD! I was in serious doubt as whether to get another one after oversteering into a lampost in my last one, but I'm loving being back in the frey!

Matt :D

Oh dear ](*,) It starts! They are wired in as the side lights. I wouldn't have done it myself as it does look a bit poo pants, but it came into the country like that. For the time being it'll stay like that as I don't much like the thought of trying to colour match the any repaired holes that they'll leave.

I forgot to mention Chr15py (Chris) who came along to look at a few tubbies with me and was a great help.

Looking at your last car i can tell its not a mod you would have done yourself!! Any plans for keeping this one more planted on the road?? Is it on stockers suspension??

Nice work Steve, especially as you used my personal favourite, MS Paint!

I would like to get rid of the little lights at some point and also get clear lenses for the sides/indicators.

I don't know about lowering the coilovers that much, though  I personally think it's about right, plus I wouldn't want to lose any more clearance with the front bumper (I've already smacked it once driving down the ramp out of my work car park ](*,) ](*,) )

Tein HA, but to me it isn't that harsh. The BIG difference between this car and my last is the gearing and the LSD. It feels a lot more planted and smooth to drive, whereas the old car, with its close stacked gears, put far too much torque through to the wheels at low revs. The LSD was so aggressive that it was easy to get the rear out in the dry.

I'm absolutely loving driving the new car compared to the last :D :D

Matt - rip that tint off then get scraping with a stanley blade and nail varnish remover :thumleft:

Remember my "man in dandism etc" sticker which covered the entire rear window? I pulled it off and it left a layer of glue on the entire window! 2 hours later it was spotless. I don't recall having any problems with the demister elements.

...and yes, get rid of them gay lights! If you want me to repair what's behind there, just holla. Job for the summer me thinks

With a touch up pen, just get a standard red, it'll never match anyway but non-metallic red is one of the easiest to touch up.

How are you finding the exhaust? Mine's a bit quiet for my liking.

Sounds like a plan, mate. I don't think the holes are too big to fill, so shouldn't be too big a job.
I'll get going on the tint too.
I don't mind the exhaust for it being quiet, the HKS filter and SSQV (which just flutters) are far more annoying. I'm going to sell these and put a standard airbox and DV on.
Chris is still trying to decide if he wants to swap his HKS Silent Hi Power for my Fujitsubo, so at some point one of those will be replacing the current exhaust and I'll get a decat at the same time.

Oh, yeah: getting a Toad AI606 fitted on Wednesday for £255. £50 of that is because I'm more than 60 miles away from Stafford! Still a bargain I reckon.

Cheers :thumleft: 3 months to find the right one being sold privately. I bought my last one from NVI who had a decent choice there and then.

Must be good to be back on, welocme back 8)

Like what Steve has suggested there, the UK plate over the letterbox works well, as do the clear lenses. But I don't think you'd pass the MOT if you take out the toblerones - you'd need to add the UK spec sidelights which are normally positioned in the arch just behind the wheel. Alternatively I think you can get some clear toblerones form eBay...

Be careful with a stanley knife! Get a hairdryer and heat one end of the sticker up then start to peel the edge with a blade (take care not to touch the heater wires). Keep the heat on as you peel. It will take a while but slowly move the hairdryer across the sticker and pull the sticker as you go, it should come off in one piece. Then yeh acetone or meths should get rid of the sticky cr@p left behind...

You'll have 16 levels of damping IIRC. The knurled metal knobs ( ) on the top of the topmounts are what control the damping, if you didn't know already. Turn them clockwise until they stop clicking (don't apply too much force, just enough to know you're at the last click). Then rotate anti-clockwise slowly feeling the clicks as you turn. Each click is one level of damping change.

When wound fully clockwise, call that level 1, the hardest setting. Level 16, the softest setting, is fully anti-clockwise 16 clicks (but don't turn it more than 16 clicks). For road setup I have my Tein Flex on about 14 front and 12 rear so that's 12 clicks clockwise for the rears, and 14 for the fronts. Some do 12/10 and for track you can crank it up more. Really depends how xxxx your roads are but I can't really go any stiffer tbh! HAs might have different damping rates then Flex too so just play with it until it feels right for your setup.

HTH mate.

PLEASE NOTE EDIT ABOVE IN DAMPING SETUP!!

Oh and re. your DV flutter, if you want less flutter then just adjust the screw in the back (depending which version of SSQV you have).
