Exhuast "popping"

Post by CosmosblueMR2 »

My exhuast "pops" or actually sounds more like a rifle "CRACK !!!! " after boosting (during changing up the gears... )

is this normal on a tubby when the cat elbow has been replaced with a 3" downpipe..? or is it maybe running far too rich ?

interested in peoples opinion / thoughts - thanks

EDIT - was mainly happening today when the weather was quite warm in the sun - not sure if this has any bearing on the issue...

Yep, normal especially if you've got a performance exhaust.

My H&S used to do this on hot days when the exhaust would get hot enough to light unburnt fuel that had been mixed with air.

Ok thanks guys for the reassurance - Just me being paranoid i guess...

It also seems to have calmed down since i took off the HKS Fcon V piggy back ECU.

would the warmer weather have any bearing on causing more of this "popping" ?

Like mentioned this can be common. My own car does it constantly even though it's been mapped by the good chaps of Thor. To be honest it does get on my nerves sometimes! :( Mine seems to do it all year round too so don't worry there either

I know exactly what you mean Franky. It's a case of drawing attention to yourself but maybe for all the wrong reasons!

Mine too does it off of boost, on the over run mainly. I guess it's something we'll just have to live with #-o I'm told that mine kicks out some pretty big flames to with the noised but from where i'm sitting i'm none the wiser :| Although I must admit to having seen Dartford tunnel light up in my rear view a good few times

A couple of times yes. Once I was accussed of having a flamer kit and then spent 10mins watching the Officer trying to find it lol [-(

The other time was for setting off an alarm on a parked car as I passed

Should I expect natural flames with a downpipe, exhaust, and vent to atmosphere bov?

I did'nt get any form of ticket at the end of it no. I think to be honest that when I have been pulled over by the law in the past it's been more a case of them wanting to have a look at the car from a (that sounds nice point of view) than anything else! Each and every time i've been stopped I have been driving within the speed limit and after the initial Q's they have always moved on to ask the kind of Q's any car geek would want to know. ie how fast is it, what does this gauge do and what does that button do?

As far as I know, they can't do anything. As long as your car passes emissions tests etc, it is road legal. Flamer kits on the other hand are illegal.
