Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
My exhuast "pops" or actually sounds more like a rifle "CRACK !!!! " after boosting (during changing up the gears...)
is this normal on a tubby when the cat elbow has been replaced with a 3" downpipe..? or is it maybe running far too rich ?
interested in peoples opinion / thoughts - thanks
EDIT - was mainly happening today when the weather was quite warm in the sun - not sure if this has any bearing on the issue...
Yep, normal especially if you've got a performance exhaust.
My H&S used to do this on hot days when the exhaust would get hot enough to light unburnt fuel that had been mixed with air.
see frank if you had convoy'd up to bluewater with me i coulda seen you and told you how big the flames were
i'll remembered to try and keep my distance incase you decide on a convoy next time
popping and flamming =

Not always , at the bluewater meet i saw rather a few loud pops
but no flames and yes some came from mr2 turbos... i didnt believe it
myself until i went to the meet the other night
Ok thanks guys for the reassurance - Just me being paranoid i guess...
It also seems to have calmed down since i took off the HKS Fcon V piggy back ECU.
would the warmer weather have any bearing on causing more of this "popping" ?
Ya that sounds about right, im about to put a TKO racing downpipe on my car with a RS-R zorst system and if i dont get loud bangs and big flashes im gonna be dissapointed
My Mates S13 shoots 3 Ft flames out the back so anythin about that is normal ahah

haha - my mate has a 200sx also... spooky ! - and you can see the flames out of hear rear window ! - and that's not with a flamer kit !
it's one hell of a way to get people off your ar5e - melt their front bumper !
Like mentioned this can be common. My own car does it constantly even though it's been mapped by the good chaps of Thor. To be honest it does get on my nerves sometimes! Mine seems to do it all year round too so don't worry there either

cheers mike... thing is though going down my local highstreet it was popping and stuff when not boosting also- it was quite embarrasing - those not in the know must think my car is falling apart !
talk about draw attention to yourself !
I know exactly what you mean Franky. It's a case of drawing attention to yourself but maybe for all the wrong reasons!
Mine too does it off of boost, on the over run mainly. I guess it's something we'll just have to live with I'm told that mine kicks out some pretty big flames to with the noised but from where i'm sitting i'm none the wiser Although I must admit to having seen Dartford tunnel light up in my rear view a good few times

A couple of times yes. Once I was accussed of having a flamer kit and then spent 10mins watching the Officer trying to find it lol
The other time was for setting off an alarm on a parked car as I passed

I did'nt get any form of ticket at the end of it no. I think to be honest that when I have been pulled over by the law in the past it's been more a case of them wanting to have a look at the car from a (that sounds nice point of view) than anything else! Each and every time i've been stopped I have been driving within the speed limit and after the initial Q's they have always moved on to ask the kind of Q's any car geek would want to know. ie how fast is it, what does this gauge do and what does that button do?
