IMOC Super Lap Battle

Post by Bender Unit »

IMOC Super Lap Battle

Concept:

-Timed sprint run around a circuit.
-One car at a time.
-3 timed attempts
-2 practice laps
-Split by category - NA / Forced induction (which would be fairer)
-Compares driver ability
-Compares performance of each mark
-Adds a fun competitive edge to the club and can also settle a few arguments
-Run on a small simple circuit which doesn't favour a particular car type or power output.
-Runs are noted and then published in a rankings table, run multiple events so people can better their times.
-Potentially run as the first half to a full track day?
-Allow IMOC club guest cars - members of the IMOC who don't have an MR2 can race in the guest rankings, Cannys Supra, my N2 etc?

Principle:

-Things are kept cheap. Cheap circuit usually means a relative simple track layout. We are talking £60 or so (if it is possible to do it at these prices)

-This is for all club members with an MR2, hence the choice of relatively safe and simple circuits

-It allows people to gain track exposure and improve their driving abilities for minimal cost

-Settles some arguments

-Introduces a fun competitive edge

-Brings the club together, each event could be run as a bit of a social

-Not run as a money making enterprise - any extra money raised will be donated to a nominated charity

Where this could go:

-Maybe if we could secure the use of a few small circuits, airfields then we can have a small season of events?

-People could be timed over different circuits, they can enter individual events or all of them - people who enter all can go in the overall rankings table

-Small circuits located throughout the UK so all MR2 owners could take part?

-Maybe a few event sponsors would like to contribute towards prizes?
Online betting

-Call out a rival, lay a small nominal bet down and prove who is better on track. Loser's winnings are donated to charity?

-This is just an idea, no definites as yet and its going to take a lot of organising, and I can't do all of it. I will make a few enquiry calls to get the ball rolling and then we can see how we progress things further.

People views and comments would be appreciated and it would also be good to gauge the interest. Hopefully something like this may attract more than the regular track day set?

Cheers

James

lol, we are already looking at something more than just a trackday. The problem with one of these kinds of things at multiple circuits is going to be the expense involved in attending multiple ones at different places (travelling costs, entry costs etc).

Could be some at an airfield with different configurations of layouts though.. we're already on it.

Yup - we are thinking of doing something possibly along these lines, although we are just throwing ideas about atm (feasibility etc).

Bender unit - do you want to be involved in the organisation of something like this?

Would be interested to know if people would be interested in taking part... (I guess we'd aim it to be a 'fun' day rather than uber serious)

Obviously i'd be up for this. One think to check is as soon as timing comes into the day it becomes a competitive event and insurance changes (for the worse).

James,

You are welcome to get involved in the ongoing discussions on this. I've actually been in touch with some contacts today about the feasability of doing pretty much what you suggest, though it was based at one venue. I think multiple venues really becomes a serious undertaking, though we are aiming at doing an interclub thing. If you want to be a part of the ongoing debate let us know and we'll get you in the loop.

Yup, forgetting about the insurance / liabilty problems for the event itself, which we're looking at as the first hurdle to clear, it would be good to know who would be interested, just to give a general idea of numbers. It would also be good to know who would be up for a 1/4 mile as well as a timed run around a course?

(Sorry to hijack the thread Bender Unit, but you've forced my hand  )

To answer the question speedy i've be a certian for a timed run, not so fussed about a 1/4 mile though.

Looking at the interest in Franks day in september i'm sure there'd be plenty of yeses to make numbers.

:thumleft:

The interest in that day is heartning for an event like this, but obviously cost is going to be a big stumbling block..

Happy to be involved in this.

For now one event is only feasible, just thinking of what it could become with a series of events.

For the time being I dont think we should worry to much about the insurance side. Let the circut worry about that. Lets just work out what sort of numbers are possible.

This could be fun!

If it's around the £60-£80 mark for what will hopefully be a whole day of an MR2 only* meet, greet, and circuits then I'd definitely be up for that.

*except IMOC guest cars of course!

Maybe you should add a poll to this thread to get people to register their interest without having to necessarily post?

Polls are slightly... unreliable.. at the moment, so I'm afraid people will actually have to type something

Thanks for the price point as well!

I'm in !

would be good to have a Central(ish) location of track if just one venue ... (midlands) otherwise it all gets expensive with accomodation and sundries (unless we can pitch tents on the airfeild premises :eye: )

I'll agree with the above comments for a central location. Anywhere between Bedford and Bruntingthorpe would be idea i guess.
