[Mk2] [Turbo] Troubles with upgrading a mk2 na to a turbo?

Post by racingrepairs »

I plan to do the above however am wondering what problems I will find in doing so.

Is the UK na shell as tough as the import turbo?

What parts will I require to swap over (i do have a complete turbo car just that the front end is smashed)

What are the pros cons etc.

Any previous experience and general advice is welcome.

If you do a search there are endless threads on here in relation to this
A uk shell is identical to an import one, and certainly isn't weaker

If you have an entire tubby car you don't need to worry about parts as you've got it all there :thumleft:

Countless pros and cons to both engine set ups and it depends on who you ask - a tubby owner will say different to an na owner  personally I vote for a V6 every time

As a very brief overview...
If your going tubby make sure you strip it down and clean/refurb it before you fit it to maximise reliability. Tubbys are easier to tune and get a lot more bhp out of but have a reputation for being less reliable. Nas have a reputation for being more reliable although tend be slow and boring in contrast. Turbos are more fun but more work :thumleft:

I`ve had both NA and Turbo and really wouldnt worry about the reliability of the Turbo any more than an NA, both my NA and Turbo have had the odd issues but both started fine first time every time. People used to say a lot that the UK shells had seen more harsh winters and more salty roads and potholed cr4ppy UK streets so recommended an import shell, but I guess the imports have been over here a long time too now so not much in it.

Just my opinion BUT... Just sell the NA and buy a turbo car. Save hundreds of pounds and hours of hassle. Unless it`s a project that you really REALLY want to just have a go at doing yourself for the fun of it.. If it`s just for a weekend driver and you want less niggles to sort and a car to be driving ASAP, sell the NA and grab a bargain rev3 turbo which will annihilate the NA for performance straight off.

Sorry mate just read the thread again, must have been tired! Sounds like you need a cheap shell.. (duh!). My comments are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Hope you find a nice cheap shell! You still might find it easier to just find a bargain cheap turbo with tax and m.o.t though and sell off whatever you have.

I've had 2 tubbys and 2 NA's, and it was the NA
's that let me down, a rev3 uk with overheating problems and piston ring failure on a rev2 import, both my tubbys have been solid, i think however it was more just a case of bad luck with the NA's.

UK na shell as tough as the import turbo?

Post by brown snake »

if you can get import then the shell should be better ie rust no salt in roads in japan my car was imported i am the first owner and my car is mint every where
i had a uk mr2 rev3 before that car and rust was there
2 years of na car and 4 years import rev3 turbo is the best to drive and own hands down :thumleft:
