Turbo Install

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

First time Ive done anything like this so it took a little while but I made it in the end :D. I put a mass order in on ebay for silicone hose, 6mm and 8mm pipe, brass T Piece, brass 8mm to 6mm straights and heat shield material.

Turbo going on is a Greddy TD05 with ATS External Wastegate kit -

Image

Got the car up in the air safely with stands, bricks under the wheels and jacks left under (dont want a car in the face that has hardly any ground clearance -

Image

Image

Ready to start the mission, just looking at the limited space puts you off...

Image

Air intake pipe work removed and Charge cooler disconnected. Notice how all the heat wrap is a mess and falling off the core :(

Image

core tied up to save draining it

Image

Manifold bolts soaked in WD40. Turbos water feed, oil feed and oil return disconnected

Image

Oil filter removed and engine hanger bracket removed. Manifold bolts undone nice and easy all from the top of the car and turbo removed complete with downpipe

Image

Old CT26 next to TD05

Image

TD05 is off a Rev3 so the tubular manifold wont fit the Rev2 so re used the stock manifold. ATS External wastegate adaptor fitted

Image

Turbo fitted

Image

Now the problem, Rev2 uses a M18 oil feed where as the rev3 uses an M12

Image

Trying to find a Rev2 adaptor for the Greddy oil line is near impossible so gave in

Image

Image

Nathan from Century Motorsport suggest a converter to convert the oil feed hole so I made some plans up and went to a local machine shop and had one made. If you want one you can buy an M18 to M12 lambda sensor converter as it uses the same pitch needed to make one (guy on ebay sells them)

Image

Finished product with Rev3 banjo bolted on

Image

Adaptor bolted onto engine with new Toyota gasket, also used thread tape for the perfect seal

Image

Oil line bolted on

Image

Turbo dropped in complete, external wastegate fitted and oil line connected up

Image

Original heat shield cut to allow it to fit and painted

Image

Charge cooler core back on and silicone hoses connected. Notice the tided up heat proofing on the core now :) used a welding rod to tie it up tight. Apexi solenoid set for External wastegate

Image

Air intake etc connected back up

Image

X-Brace back on

Image

Oil return line, Screamer pipe. connect exhaust up and all done :D

Image

Changed plugs and put new ignition leads on while the core was off and did a oil and filter change also bled the coolant

Screamer pipe sounds amazing!!!

Overall it looks harder than it is. I think it was a easier job than removing and installing a downpipe due to how easy it was to get to the manifold bolts

Good write up Steve :thumleft: And plenty pics which really helps. Never changed a turbo myself either, but would give me a bit more confidence to do the same having seen this.

Left field question - you have a Rev 3+ intake manifold, does that fit straight on the Rev 2 head? Presume Rev3+ throttle body required also? Thinking of trying to swap mine while I've got the chargecooler core off..

Hows the car going?

Ah, on closer inspection I think I was barking up the wrong tree - looks like yours has the sticker / plate on top of the manifold removed, which threw me! ](*,)

Its running fine, just haven't really used it since I bought it because of the crap weather, Christmas, offshore for a bit and various other things. I'm converting the igntion to direct igntion. Once thats working, I'll be getting it serviced and put on the rollers to tweek the existing ECU map (if it needs it). Don't want them to fiddle around with it too much, as it hits ~1 bar at ~3500 rpm, which I thought was quite good for the turbo thats on it, and its pretty economical on the motorway, averaging pretty much the same MPG as my N/A, which was nice. :)

Sorry I recall you asked me to tell you when I was selling the CT20b turbo that came with the car, I forgot, but seems you have bigger things anyhoo.

im asuming insurance are aware of this :eye: :eye:

not sure why youd want wrap on a screamer pipe :?

hopefully the stock system will run that turbo ok...
asuming your keeping it at 1bar max? :?

would guess should get you to 300hp with stock injectors/ecu..

looking at all that i bet it weighed a TON!!!! stock mani, huge adapter and a heavy turbo, bet that was tricky, lol

welcome to screamer land...

Rev2 engine remember! So presumably 440cc injectors if it's on stock management.

Yep I asuming 440s and stock rev1/2 ecu.
Don't see why 300hp isn't possible with a turbo that size on stock management.
For sure will lean out, but not lean out to close to dangerous levels.

Is there a way of telling what size injectors are fitted, if I was to remove one? I bought a Rev2 turbo which alegedlly has ~350hp, but I was wondering what size of injectors it would need for that power!

Shouldn't need to remove any, just look at the colour of the top of the injectors

In general

440s are black top
540s red
800s blue

For 350hp, if it's tuned, I'd expect at least 800s in there which are usually blue.

Hmmm, dunno Jim, as its Keith's (KM) old car, and it came with a set of SARD 800's (or 850's, not too sure) to be fitted. I'm presuming it's got Rev3+ 540's in it, because it's hitting 1 bar on a GT3071r, and from what I know of 3S-GTE's, 440's wouldn't keep up with that flow rate... :-k

I'm thinking of fitting the 800's anyway, and getting it mapped (although its got some serious punch as it is, can't be far off 350hp), so will see how that goes.

Screamer was already heat wrapped so just left it.

Stock system seems to be running it fine so far, alot better than the Overboost CT26 anyway!! CT26 would overboost to stupid levels and cause knock that retarded the timing big time. I couldnt overtake anything full throttle without hitting 1.38bar (and thats when I let off before probably would have went higher)

Got the TD05 set to 0.95bar, even at 0.95 bar its more efficient feeling than the CT26 (probably because theres no overboosting / knock / retarding) and it holds the set boost rock solid so I dont have to worry about watching my boost guage when overtaking now :D

The adaptor doesnt add that much weight but yea its quite a heavy bit of kit to lift in with the car up in the air and standing on caravan step LOL

Screamer is amazing, love the noise it makes. Overtook a car the other day that was doing 35mph in a 60 zone, knocked it into 2nd screamer comes in and before you know it your at 60, bet the woman in the honda jazz sh!t herself

Im actually enjoying the car alot more now as I dont have to worry about overboosting!!

Told my dad that the next mod is bigger injectors and a standalone ecu but he wasnt too happy about the cost side of it..... Untill I took him out in the car, got back and he said "So when are you ordering the Injectors and ECU" now hes changed his mind

Are my Vacuum / Boost pressure lines setup ok (going to the Apexi solenoid and Wastegate) or are they too long? what can they cause if they are too long?

I was thinking of getting a Water / Meth injection kit while I save for a ecu + injectors + remap, do you think this would give any sort of gain / engine protection?

oh one thing I noticed with the CT26 when wheel spinning in the wet My RPM limit was 7,200, now it seems to be 7,500... whats going on there??

Nice

And in white as well, nearly every subaru impreza I see is blue lol

Image

Planning on doing anything to it? Uprated turbo with Screamer pipe?? :D

Im addicted to the screamer now lol

I was planning on seeing how many miles I can get out of the tank due to the slight increase in turbo lag but just cant resist letting the screamer go

cant wait untill we get our 1 week of summer and the roads are all warm and dry, 1st, 2nd (and sometimes 3rd) in the wet is now just stupid, even at 0.75bar  as soon as the screamer comes in its time to hold on tight
