engine overheating

Post by leeandjude »

can anyone help me with this? I think my mr2 has an airlock somewhere but i cant get rid of it. I have done all the things in knowledge base.
when i started the right hand coolant pipe (looking in from the front) got hot but not the left hand side indicating air lock. so i used the bleed valve on the radiator, got the air out and the left hand side got hot so i presumed that lock was out. but the heater inside the car does not blow hot so i presumed i have to bleed the heater by the white dial on the front firewall. opened that up and air did come out with cold water which then turned into hot water as it circulated. closed the white dial.
but it still doesnt blow hot air and the car is getting hot.
ANY other ideas as im sure its something simple. do you have to use the clear plastic tubing on the bleed valves? help!

Yes you have to attach tubing to both the bleed valve on top of the radiator and the bleed valve on the heater matrix (white dial). You then need to attach this tubing high up, so that the tube is higher than the filler cap at the back. (at this point i should say that your car needs to be on a level surface)

You then open both the valves, turn your heaters onto full and top up at the filler neck, as you do this, any air in the system will get pushed out of the pipes at the front. Once you are happy that the level of water in both the tubes at the front are the same level as the filler neck, close the bleed valves at the front and put your filler cap back on. BUT only turn it one click.

Start your engine and let it idle for about 5 mins or until you get hot air from the blowers. Repeat the above process until you get really warm air out of the blowers. Once this is achieved, turn your rad cap so its on fully, take it for a blast up the road to get the water fully circulating right around the engine and radiator. Come back, let it cool down, and check your coolant levels again, keep topping up as necessary.

Hope this helps (but its pretty much a repeat of the knowledge base)
