You're probably right there actually, although it'll most likely be showing this screen most of the time...

360 has what, 2 years over the PS3 though so fair dues.

I think these consoles should have an agreed shelf life personally of say, 10 years.

When were the launch dates for them both?

I really hope that doesn't happen. Who wants to start out all over again in 3 years time?
But then Microsoft are the type of company that just keeps churning out rubbish. What was the point of Vista when they were already planning Windows 7 ? ](*,)

As said about, consoles should have a life of 10 years, minimum.

Quick google search had BBC reporting a Dec 2005 launch for the 360
So IMO anything before 2015 is a disgrace.
Based on their previous too, they'll probably bin the 360 the moment a new machine comes out.

"Hopefully" they'll make it totally backwards compatible. IMO there's no reason why, by then, this shouldnt be anything other than easy.

the people that have had the console for 3+ years already?

i like it how you got the dig in with MS too. name me a technology manufacturer that doesnt pump out new software quicker than we need it.

and releasing vista hardly makes them the "the type of company that keeps churning out rubbish".

windows 7 is also built for touch screen so isnt just a new OS but almost a new platform.

with regards to the new console. well see it before 2015 but they will continue to support the 360 and the original plan was for that to be a 10 year life.

If any of you know what "Cloud Computing" is then you will know that this next generation of consoles could very well be the last.

Why upgrade your hardware every 3 years when you can pay a small subscription and have your game console/s, PC and even full company networks (Servers and Clients) hosted on a giant massively powerful server/machine/mega console which then send your session display to a tiny little box under your tv to convert the data into a usable image. if you want Office 2012, Wii 2, new Gaming PC or a 50 user server based network you just add it to your subscription and away you go.

If you have used Terminal Services or Citrix you get the idea.

Only the broadband is holding us back at the mo. but by the time the uk is covered in fibre it should be a reality. I am training up on this now as its going to define the way everything is done and we don't plan on being left behind (We already have our host and pricing agreed for our offering), granted it will take time to adopt but its the inevitable evolution of the way hardware has to go.

I wonder if I will have to pay 3 times as much for my Virtual Mac

MS will completely turn their back on the 360 as soon as the next machine is released just like the original XBOX forcing the loyal fans to upgrade instantly.

The PS3's problem is that everyone was/still/still are (inc. Sony themselves) developing for the PS2 after the PS3 was released, Some PS2 exclusives were getting better reviews and reception than new PS3 titles. A lot of 3rd party companies (EA for instance) were releasing PS2 and PS3 versions of the new games (No XBOX 1 equivilent) so PS2 owners had no reason to upgrade instantly as the software hadn't completely dried up.

The PS3 has an intended 10 year life span, But Sony hinted that the PS4 might make an appearance 5 years into that (so, 2012) but will still continue to support and develop for the PS3.

i remember reading about something, cant remeber what it was called now but it was at a recent game show.

they basically sent the game data over your broadband so you didnt need a console, game or anything.

dont think the BB in the UK is quite up to it yet but it sounds pretty cool!!

Andy what do you base that statement on? the original xbox? which was built as a testing ground for new future tech. something that was also known pretty early on.

the PS3's trouble at the start was that nobody wanted to develop for it so there was no reason for sony fans to upgrade.

specially when as you say, some of the games were better rated on the older platform.

sony didnt have much choice either, there launch was crap and the knew it.

I certainly don't want to be using a console 10 years after it was launched, as by then graphics will have moved on so much that it'd be like playing Pong all over again. 4-5 years is perfect for console gaming, and whilst backwards compatibility is a nice thing to have, so few people make use of it that's its really not worth the bother when you already have dedicated hardware to run your old games.

Would you still want to be playing ugly old PS1 games today? That's what a 10 year life cycle would mean. No, graphics aren't everything (I've argued that point myself on here many a time), but we don't really want to be stuck behind when technology moves on as it would do. Although it could cause PC gaming to become attractive again...

Ps1 came out in about 1994/1995 - that was 14-15 years ago.

And the jump between that and now is huge. Do you really see such a huge advance being made between the 360/PS3 and the next set?
Not sure I can see it being that huge. Even the jump between Original Xbox & PS2 was pretty big. Not just in terms of games but as a media package.

Not to mention, the sheer cost of the Xbox & PS3 means people would generally be pi$$ed right off if they had to spend £300 - £400 (probably more) on the next generation console(s)

My comment was more aimed at replacement though. IE the Xbox and PS3 should be out and supported for that time. If there's an overlap, not as bad. But I wouldnt want to see what happened with the original Xbox where it was dropped almost as soon as the 360 came about.

Tbh, the thing I most care about is Guitar Hero lol. I love those games and would like to keep them and the control stuff and not have to spend a small fortune getting it on a new console. I have 2 bloody consoles now so if new ones come out and I want them I will replace them, not add to them.
