sorted my RROD the proper way!

Post by James »

Well my old white 360 RROD'd again - the towel trick worked for a while but is defo no perm fix. So....

I bought an 'x clamp kit' on ebay for £4 and it worked a treat!

There is a bit of fiddling around but it really isnt that bad - strip your 360, remove the motherboard, remove the existing X clamps on the underneath of the motherboard, remove the 2 heatsyncs and clean all the crap (thermal paste) off the CPU and GPU using a few cotton buds and alcohol (I used white spirit lol and wasnt shy with it and it worked fine)

Once both chips are all nice and clean I smacked some fresh thermal paste on both chips (comes with the kit) and put the new bolts & washers in place of the old X clamps and put it all back together.
Hey presto it works like a charm again
I had it on all day sunday - a few games and divx playback and no probs what so ever.

Thought I would share this with you as its a proper fix and only costs £4 - xbox repair companies use this exact fix and charge £50 upwards.

All you need is a torque screwdriver bit (2 different sizes) and a size 9 socket (depending on what kit you buy) and thats it.

Sounds interesting.

My old xbox (sat in the wardrobe) didnt get the RROD but freezes up when you turn it on. Do you think it'll work for that?

I would say hell yeh.

Freezing/hanging is the first stages of RROD.

If you keep trying it again and again it will eventually give you RROD.

Give me a shout if you need any help with it.

yes it will because freezing is an issue with the gpu, some fresh thermal paste on the chips (use artic silver 5)
will sort this out. x clamps are great and new thermal paste seems to make the 360 alot quiter again.
2red lights means the console is over heating, 3 red lights means there is a general fault and its easy to check the fault code (press the sync up and eject button at the same time, 1 red light is 1, 2 is 2 3 is 3 and 4 is 4 obviously lol) so 0020 would be over general over heating.
there is a list on the net of all possible error codes.
ive fixed 6 this week so far and sold most of them.
i got 2 for free out of a recycling place fixed both and sold both for 100quid each!!
need any help let me no

Sweet, I'll order this!

Might place it downstairs in the living room or just keep it incase I want to go travelling with the Xbox and it'll save me unwiring the current one.

You could mod the spare one and not connect it to live, then you'll be able to 'preview' games without having to fork out

It wouldnt be the most practical of idea's having 2 xboxes though.

I cant get on ebay from work but going by the description - yes.
They are abt £4 and looks like a bag of bolts and a smaller bag with the thermal paste inside.

There's various kits. Some have metal washers, some have nylon and some have rubber.

All seem to say the other is worse.

I bought the one with the metal washers and its perfect.

there is a good video guide on utube that takes you through all the steps.
In the video he uses plastic washers.

If you get the metal ones just dont do them up mega tight as the motherboard is fibreglass after all - i did mine up a little over hand tight.
