[Mk2] [Turbo] MR2 REV2 Engine reving and idle issue

Post by dunc982 »

Ive just completed a full service on my mr2 turbo including oil, plugs, filter etc. Ive just started it up and noticed that if I hold the revs up to about 3k and let off, then the engine stuggles to idle for a few seconds and is back to normal. Also whilst reving it to 3k I notice a fair amount of exhaust smoke which isnt there at idle, which might indicate fuel not burning correctly up the rev range. Although it does sound fairly smooth when building up the revs. Any suggestions?

Ive heard that the 3sgte engine is sensitive to plug type and fuel. I havnt driven the car since I drove it home from buying it and maybe premium fuel want used??

Or the other thing I was thinking was map sensor or vacuum leak?

I think it was a grey smoke, I carnt remember, will check tomorrow. I checked the oil level and it was fine.
Do you think its the symtoms of a dodgey oxygen sensor?

i think i say this about every problem similar to this one but it sounds like a boost leak, is it firing on all 4??

Yep its firing on all 4, like It say it revs up smoothly. Boost leak is a possibility, I will check the pipe work over tomorrow. Any more suggestions?

ignition components?? the plugs all gapped correctly??? just seems strange that after new plugs it's doing it, me and my brother got a dodgy batch of plugs once, i mean about 5 of the feckers were not right, ended up taking them back. mights just be that a HT lead is not on properly???

Ive just been doing some searching and ive read somewhere that when you disconnect your battery (which I did while the car wasnt in use over the last week and while I was working on it) that the ecu will have to re-learn so would this explain my problem? Do I just have to drive it and it will re-learn? Do mr2 turbos not run quite right directly after disconnecting battery?

I have a rev1 useing a rev 3 ecu and no afm and if I disconnect the battery for any length of time or reset the ecu mine has the same symptoms as yours - if I take mine for a run the problem goes away :D
That said this may not be the problem with yours but it may be worth taking it for a spin if you are sure its not an actual mechanical issue.

Oh thats a relief then, theres a chance its something simple like that. I dont have the car insured at the moment therefore am unable to drive it, Im planning to sort that in the next week or two :D
