By the sounds of it he has no router what so ever and gets his internet via the mobile broadband that carphone warehouse and the like are offering.
Works the same way as WAP IIRC.

sounds like you need to setup a network in windows. Have it setup so the internet is going direct into the laptop then to a router.

You will see the laptop from xbox for now cus you've connect directly using the erthernet but it wont see the internet unless you setup a network and then setup xbox to see the network. If that makes sense.

I know exactly what you're trying to do and it's absolutely possible. When you enable Internet Connection Sharing on the computer it turns it into a router. A router just has an internal and external network interface, which is exactly what the computer has (internal being the cabled lan/ethernet port, and external being the USB broadband widget). You can then use a crossover ethernet cable to link the xbox to the computer's lan port and away you go. When running ICS a computer runs a small DHCP server etc on its network interface so you should be able to set the xbox to all automatic and it should pick up its settings from the PC. Be warned that enabling ICS on the laptop will reset all IP address settings on the network card, so if he ever uses it for anything else he'll have to disable ICS, and then re-enable ICS when he wants to use the xbox again.

Other things to bear in mind are that you'll probably want to disable power saving on the laptop as the last thing you will want is for it to suspend mid-game because no-one's moved the mouse on it in a while! It will work better if you have the UPNP components of windows installed (XP or higher) as the 360 supports using UPNP to punch holes through firewalls.

And there's even a guide from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126 - you'll only need to follow the 'On the Host Computer' steps as the Xbox will be the client and will figure its settings out automatically.

just to unconfuse matt,
if u have 2 routers, one pluged into the fone line sending a wireless signal
then the second router has to be set up to be in bridge mode (takes 2 mins)
plug the second router into the 360 via the ethernet port on the 360.

now the router connected to the 360 recives the wireless signal and allows the 360 to go on live wirelessly. yes i know there will be a cable going from the xbox to the second router but if u have short ethernet cable then u can just sit it on top of the 360.
this makes the 360 wireless (so to speak) as there is no wire going from the first router to the second.

that make any sense? :? lol

Toxo you are a legend.. Will give this a go. I've got a feeling he's not tried it with a crossover ethernet- just the normal cable. Which is why it's not working..

Thanks for all the input guys.. very helpfull as always..

lol this is a funny thread.

the guy wants to do a simple internet connection sharing and you guys are complicating the matter 10 fold.

the trouble your friend will have is connection speed and from my experience with dongles, stability.

its ALL about the upload speed when it comes to online gaming. download speeds have been high enough for years but you need good upload and most people dont realise that.

if he gets anything less than 256k up then i wouldnt bother as it will just lag out and ruin the game.

That's the next step. to see how good the connection is!! ha.. I bet after all this it's really bad.. he's only really looking to play Tiger woods, so as it's not like cod or fifa hopefully he'll be ok. I think eventually he'll get a landline and real BB but for the short term...!!

Yea i think youd be ok with tiger woods :thumleft:

My friend has the dongle from 3 i think and his connection drops all the time. Not sure if others are more stable.

I dont think he has a bad signal either so its weird.

If ya go here.

http://www.xbox360forum.com/forum/xbox- ... guide.html

and its about 4th post down. Connecting via ICS.

mite be worth adding to the guide that you should set the xbox to auto if it isnt already.

the dashboard on the 360 is good for diagnosing too so if you have trouble check that and it will tell you where the problem is.

The speeds i have seen on them dongle things isnt very good, and I wouldnt use it for Xbox live, the bandwidth isnt great, but the latency is even worse...

I cant comment on powerline but I use www.devolo.co.uk works an absolute treat and does not slow down at all. I'm still not convinced by wireless for gaming so I use this as a solution.

Your kidding?! I plugged mine in fri night and its the nuts!
I get 200mbps - much faster than Wireless.

I can stream any HD movie perfectly, no stuttering and no buffering what so ever.

I highly recommend this!
