You will see the laptop from xbox for now cus you've connect directly using the erthernet but it wont see the internet unless you setup a network and then setup xbox to see the network. If that makes sense.

A router just has an internal and external network interface, which is exactly what the computer has
(internal being the cabled lan/ethernet port, and external being the USB broadband widget).
You can then use a crossover ethernet cable to link the xbox to the computer's lan port and away you go.
When running ICS a computer runs a small DHCP server etc on its network interface so you should be able to set the xbox to all automatic and it should pick up its settings from the PC.
Be warned that enabling ICS on the laptop will reset all IP address settings on the network card, so if he ever uses it for anything else he'll have to disable ICS, and then re-enable ICS when he wants to use the xbox again.

the guy wants to do a simple internet connection sharing and you guys are complicating the matter 10 fold.
the trouble your friend will have is connection speed and from my experience with dongles, stability.
its ALL about the upload speed when it comes to online gaming.download speeds have been high enough for years but you need good upload and most people dont realise that.
if he gets anything less than 256k up then i wouldnt bother as it will just lag out and ruin the game.
