help me! my dilemma....

Post by nightSpirit »

Right, Just bought lots of parts for my MR2, about to get them fitted next week (T67 etc). But I've always had a soft spot for the escort cosworth...and it's been getting worse...I love 'em. Drove one today up in wakefield and it was awesome, I want it. But here is my problem!

I love my MR2 and it's one of the nicest around, I know because of the time and effort that's gone into it (and everyone who sees it saying it's the mutt's)....but I can't realistically keep 3 cars (I have a fiesta Si too for running around in). I could buy the cosworth, but then I'd only drive it a few times a week..so when do I drive the 2? 3 Lots of insurance, tax, mot, petrol, servicing etc.

I figure I have a few options...

1) I get the parts fitted to the MR2 and drive around in a 400+ monster but also buy the cosworth over a few months...and then probarbly sell the mr2.

2) I buy the cosworth, sell the MR2 as is, sell the parts on here or somewhere...and pay it off with the money from that and tune the ar$e off it (it's already running 280hp).

3) I keep the 2, tune it, buy the cosworth...tune it...and live in a box.

4) Ignore 3, it's late.

So what do you guys reckon? anyone got a cossie?. Sick of Jap crap for want of a better phrase, everyone has a JDM car these days it seems, cosworths are very reliable, very tuneable (cheaply too), very capable, they don't depreciate too much, they look cool, they have pedigree, they're rare.

Any advice welcome as I have till monday to tell the guy I'll buy it ;)

what to do what to do?

Sounds like you have had your time with the 2.

Sell the MR2, buy the Cossie.

Use the Festa to run around in.

Sorted.

Cosworth - nice motor.

Always wanted a mint series 1 white RS Turbo myself, but that's just me showing my age.....

If it's what you want then go for it, you can always buy another 2 in the future....

I hankered after a Merc coupe when I had my first MR2 turbo, so much that I sold the 2 and bought the Merc. I missed the 2 community (and the 2) so much that I bought another MR2 Turbo (the one I have now although it now looks completely different to what it did as I bought it cheap as a project car).

There'll still be 2's available if you miss us!

Go for the Cosworth. As long as you keep it in tip top shape and pretty standard, you're not likely to lose any money on it - they've pretty much become modern classics.

This is an MR2 forum and people are telling you to sell your mint tubby and get an ESCORT!!! WTF?

If your sick of Jap Crap fair play to you but why a FORD and why an ESCORT?

You will never get the reliability with a Ford (trust me I work for them)

Up to you dude but I say Keep the Tubby, mod the b0ll0x off it with parts you have already bought and forget about the Escort.

What you looking to spend on the Cossie? £14,000 ish?

xxxx spending that much money on a mid 90s Ford Escort.

Stay with the 2 mate, you know you want to!!!!!!!

I'm with you two on this one. I can't believe anyone would choose to sell the MR2 only to buy a bloody Ford of all things to replace it! :?

I hate Fords with a passion though so I might not be the best person to ask  And before i'm blasted by those who are abou to tell me how great some Fords are, save your breath. I've owned all mannor of them, including 1 Cossie and I would'nt go back to them for love nor money!

2p's worth and all that

go with what you want mate. my personal opinion of the cossie is that it's a chav mobile as every essex person with a escort 1.4 sticks the bodykit and wheels on it and waters down the exclusivity of it.

i'm not exactly sold on the looks either, especially when you can look around and see what you can get for th same money:

skyline
rx7
supra
s2000
z3 m roadster
subaru
evo 5

the list goes on and on, i think all of the above look way nicer and are more reliable.

a)i can't afford a decent one
b)Need 4 seats

but it's my dream car,if this is the guys dream car then go for it .I know someone who sold there rs4 and bought a renault 5 turbo(the original mid-engined job) because it's the car he dreamed of having as a kid.

The Escort Cossie is an awesome looking motor IMO. But...

You don't see many about cause its a Ford and in the UK it rains most of the time so they're all locked up in garages under sheets with the owners to scared to take them out because they rust.

Image
This was my last Ford which i'd already spent a lot on and turbo conversion was next on the list but alas, 3 and a half years old and rust started to come through. Took it back to Ford and they had to chop out and replace a section of the rear passenger arch. Few months later and the roof above the front window seal had visible rust and the boot where the spoiler attaches all started to bubble so i decided to get shut and bought the 2.

You don't need a Cossie to turn heads you're tubby achieves this, Get all your bits in and make it the flying machine you want

If you want a Cossie get one from the trafford centre like i did, 1/18 scale, £19.99 :)

thanks for all the opinions...people, I'm impressed by the lack of insults towards the ford (well almost ;) )...it is a car I've always wanted and if it's in your blood you haven't got much hope. As Shaf mentioned all those other nice cars...to me they're 10 a penny, evos and scoobies (and this is where I insult some people) are like busted or mcFly....the cossie is John Lydon. er. yeah, that's what I meant to say.

I do love my MR2 and I've sunk way too much money into it (I mean I have all these parts here ffs). I'm afraid of driving the MR2 (not because of speed, because it means a lot to me and I don't want to break it)...I know a few people who've had FD's and got 2's and had the same feeling?. I don't get any pleasure out of it I suppose is what I'm saying..and I should do. I'd just love to finish it off now and see what 400+ hp does for my pants, but in doing that I've wasted money I could put to the cosworth.

Ah boll@cks, I'm still not sure lol...but if I'm even thinking of selling the 2, I can't love it that much can I?

Thanks for all the comments again, it all helps :)

Cosworth is 13k btw, 86k, black, lux pack, full suspension and bushes all round, rsoc owner, 2 owners, ffsh, stage 1 tune (running 1.3bar and flying), stock rims, twin morettes etc..just very solid and tidy.

Parts I have (as someone asked)...T67-25 turbo kit for Rev1 car, Power Enteprise 800cc injectors and 255 ltr/hr fuel pump, HKS duralum cam pulleys, 264 duration cams (outer shim), GREX oil cooler, Power FC with boost controller, all the parts for a rev1 powerFC conversion, custom fuelrail. I have someone who wants first refusal on them though.

sorry to burst your bubble dood, but cams are outer shim...you need inner shim, so they won't work :(

haha, cruise past me...I need to see a modified cosworth against a modified 2 I think before I agree or scoff at that comment. I have to admit though, the journey back from Thor should be very good fun I reckon we'll both have lost our licences before we reach knutsford..we need someone to come down with a video camera.
