Wii Virtual Console + Component Cables

Post by JohnnyC »

Bought a small LCD TV recently, connected the Wii - and noticed some ghosting (most notable in the settings menu - white cursor against the black background). This was using the (composite) scart supplied with the Wii.

Bought some GameWare (from Game) component cables, connected them yesterday - ghosting gone.
And everything looks much better, can even select the EDTV/HDTV setting in the options :)

But, now all the Virtual Console games don't work - you can hear them playing, but the TV just brings up 'Invalid Format' :-k

Thing is, I'm sure I tested one of the Virtual Console games after first connecting the component leads :-k

Changing the settings back to '50hz 576i' or '60hz 480i' doesn't help either.

I need to play Sonic the Hedgehog

My Wii runs fine via the component lead and using the VC, so I can't really help you apart from to say that there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

Found this on the Wiki though:

"Initially, some PAL Virtual Console games would not display correctly on high-definition televisions when connected via the component lead. However, starting with the April 13, 2007 update of the PAL Virtual Console, certain newly added games, such as Punch-Out!!, support the "Wii Component Cable Interlace mode." This is a temporary fix to problems with various Virtual Console games being played over component cable on HDTVs. The mode can be enabled by accessing the operations guide of the game, and (with the Nunchuk attached) pressing the buttons Z A 2 simultaneously. A sound is played if the mode is enabled correctly. Several older games also have updates available to enable the feature, such as Super Castlevania IV. The mode can be disabled by using the same method, but with the button combination Z A 1 instead. A full list of games supporting this mode is available at nintendo.no,[63] an English version can be found at vc-forums.com."

Worth a shot at any rate.

Cheers, I didn't search before hand as I didn't realise it was such a common problem - now I know it is #-o

I've tried the Z-A-2 bodge, I mean fix, and it's nearly worked :|

All the VC games now work (Donkey Kong Country, SNES Zelda, Sonic 3 etc), except one - the original Sonic ](*,)

Very poor show Nintendo

In all honesty I haven't touched my Wii in about a year, so mine could well be b0rked as well.

Think the only other solution is to go back to the supplied scart - which is actually only composite. But the ghosting isn't acceptable - it's 2009 not 1989.

Or pay another fortune for the Wii RGB scart lead (would it fix the ghosting that the component lead does?). Would mean having to go back to 576i or 480i instead of 480p though ](*,)
