fuel pump gone

Post by russ3161 »

my 88 mk1 has packed in at work. It was left out all day in extreme cold and by the time I came to drive home it'd turn over but wouldn't catch. AA came out and said there's no fuel getting through so he thinks the fuel pump has gone. Would that be caused by extreme cold or can they temporarily pack in? How much will a garage charge me to replace it?

It's quite a hefty job as the whole tank needs to be dropped to replace it,

Mine had a similar problem, except it would start for 1-2 seconds before cutting out, but with some 'ez-start' sprayed into the inlet manifold it would continue to idle, lumpily. This was eventually tracked down to injector wiring so it's worth checking that the injectors are getting a decent 12v supply among several other things before commiting to changing the fuel pump...

Look at the diagnostic connector in the engine bay, and you'll see one of the pins marked FP and another marked B+. Use a short bit of wire to connect the two, and you should hear the fuel pump run.

Interesting result on this one. The garage took it apart, as I understand through the interior, and gained access to the pump. He checked the feed and plugged in his own feed and when it was put back together it worked. He phoned me saying he'd fixed it but didn't know how!

What do people think? Did it just seize in the extreme cold or was it a loose connection etc? Has anyone else had anything similar to this. Someone on here said something about the pump interfering with the radio?! Can this be true coz I was getting some interferance just before hand like a mobile was about to go off?!

Sorry I can't be more explicit about what the mechanic did, I've not seen him yet and I'm not mechanically minded.

He could be talking about the pump electrical connector, which is under the centre console - you can't get to the pump through the interior without an angle grinder being involved
