tail light modification

Post by dave wall »

hi

I know theres a mod that you can do where all 4 rear lights work as normal and brake lights, and you have to relocate the fog light into one of the reverse light spaces (rev 3)..... but does anyone have a how-to on doing this? Just looks loads better with all 4 rear lights lit :)

thanks

Mine are kinda like that. When my lights are on all four are on, then the outside pair are brakes, and the inside pair are fogs. No need to mess with the reverse lights then.

Captian muppet did mine at JAE :D sorry mate, can't remember your real name

A cheap easy way of getting all 4 lights on is to just swap the fog light bulbs with 5w tail light bulbs and leave the switch on in the cockpit. You won't get them coming on when braking but they'll be lit whenever your lights are on

i did this mod the easy way (albeit at cost) by buying another wiring loom from toyota at about £20 and replacing the old inside bulb holder with the outside bulb holder of new loom and wiring the old fog light to one of the reverse lights

If you fit dual filament bulbs to the inner two lamps, you then wire the side light filaments from the inner two to the outer two, giving four sidelights. Wire the two inner brakelights together in parallel and wire a 5 amp diode (less than a quid from Maplins) from one of the outer brake lights to the inner ones to make the inner brake lights work. Now wire another 5 amp diode from the fog light feed to the inner two brakelights.
When you brake all 4 lights light up. When you switch on the foglights the inner two light up bright and the others act as brake lights as normal.

Stef,

Great stuff.... just picked up the post. Could you just confirm whether the wiring suggestions would be the same for me....

I have a UK spec car where outer 2 rears are both dedicated side lights and brake lights, and inner 2 are dedicated fogs

Cheers

Not really. You have UK spec lamps which have extra plastic in the moulding to increase the seperation distance between the brake light and fog lamp. The only way around this is to get hold of a pair of JDM clusters, which don't have this extra moulding.

I would think you can do the same as me, the only difference being that your UK car will have the extra separator like Patrick says. I added a switch in line with the diode from outer brake lights to inners, so I can switch off the inner brakelights if the MOT man moans.

That ist exactly what I'm gonna do. My stock MR2 had already the rev. 3 taillights. But I bought the US spec ones without fog lights (but with red side markers). Only these have got four of the same circles. If you wire it up like "g" said, you still have fog lights at the rear (inner lights), all four circles are lit when switching on lights and only the outer lamps are lit when braking!
