[Mk2] [Turbo] Yellow rev4 turbo - latest pictures

Post by James Junior »

Well despite the poor work at the body shop recently I am still pleased to have the car back in standard bodywork. She's getting closer to how I want her anyway.

I spent a day painting my calipers today, (feedback please - I am expecting a 'marmite' response!) fitted the UK side strips and have also properly fitted my existing mahoosive number plates for now.

Here is the progress so far, thanks for looking :) :-

When I bought her the car came fitted with this rare Departure exhaust. Lovely note without being too loud...

Other jobs on the radar are clear side repeaters, front splitter painted yellow, trim linings for front wheel arches, interior detailing, new wheels with wider tyres at the back and spacers for the rear wheels.

Which of course means that the existing wheels will soon be up for sale if anyone is interested.

Before I read the last bit, I was going to slam you for not getting the splitter painted yellow!

So why didn't you get the body shop to paint it yellow? Or is that a can of worms?

Looking good, though. Like the red calipers and wheels :thumleft:

Setting aside the spray job.. I really hope the right hand jockey sorts it out for you
Really nice looking car, calipers look cool, supprised you did not go for yellow tho 8).
How hard was it to do? I have been considering doing it for ages, but I will prob end up hating the results ](*,)
What style/ colour etc have you got planned for your wheels? 3 spoke Advans would be coooool  \:D/

Can of worms would be right my friend - see my 'epic' in the genral section under 'bodyshop nightmare' if you dare!

To cut a long story short my bodyshop cocked up big time and one the many issues was that he forgot my explicit instructions to spray the splitter yellow!

Thanks for your positive comments.

Thanks Nikaiyo - I had wanted red calipers for ages and very pleased with the results.

The job was very straight forward actually. Cost me about twenty quid and four hours work!

I bought red Hammerite paint (a £13.95 tub, had LOADS left over - you could probably get away with the smaller tin) and a wire brush. Simply jacked up each corner of the car, scrubbed all the brake dust and crap off the calipers, washed them down, scrubbed them again and then put a few coats of Hammerite on. Whilst I as waiting for the first coat to dry I gave the wheel a good wash inside and out whilst it was off the car, then when the last coat was still drying I replaced the wheel (it doesn't make any contact with the caliper so no danger of paint coming off on the wheel) and then moved onto the next corner.

Left the car to stand for about four hours before driving her.

For my new wheels I am thinking either some nice deep dish Jap style five spokes or multi spokes, ideally in gunmetal with a polished rim. Not keen on the black wheel, silver rim combo as I think this is too much of a transient fashion.

Might not be for a while though as a sudden return to bachelordom has meant my cost of living has soared!

Hi James,

:-k Don't know whether I prefered it before or after as I love the Border front, did the right thing IMO getting rid of the Border sides though, and I'd guess standard is going to be easier to sell. Looks smart even with the bodge, never though of colour coding the radiator though. :cyclops:

Was suprised you didn't go for yellow calipers, but then again I like everything colour coded. My wardrobe full with half black and half white t-shirts so I'm pretty boring in that respect....which is why I've got a black (well more sort of moo cow cloured at the mo) car.

I'm a caliper paint lover, but did go to extreme with mine. Ended up sanding the whole thing down to a mirror finish (components as well) and covered them with VHT laquer which went yellowish and the rust came through   so that was easily 80 or so hours down the pan. Ended up just spraying them silver/chrome. Only upside is that as they are smooth they reflect the light nicely and catch my eye everytime I see the car. Hope you went for the smooth hammerite over the hammered look.

What size wheels you after, I have a set of 16" deep dish 7 spoke with polished rims and centres and worn F1's, that I'm refurbing inside and out....over the last year or two. After doing all my engine, brake components etc I can't look at sandpaper anymore so I look for anything else to do before getting down to finishing them. If your after 16" let me know and I'll put up some pics. They are Fensai wheels and never seen them on another car, let alone an MR2 but seriously look great. Was going to put them back on mine but the 17's I have look alittle dwarfed now with the kit. Can also have them sprayed to your personal colour of choice!

Are you going to polish your ring, or stay brushed. :oldtongue:

Just to add,

If your going for clear side repeaters order them from Halfrauds, about £17. I got a set from ebay previously and they were too large and started bending the wing out of shape, Halfraud ones fit perfectly

Marc - thanks bud, will drop in and see the thieving barstewards for a set when I get back 'oop north'. Have had a set off the net before and they were okay but wouldn't like to take any chances.

Sounds like you are a dedicated man! I felt like I'd busted a gut after just four hours yesterday let alone 80!

I am looking for 17" wheels I am afraid but thanks for the offer.

BiGWiLlYsTyLe - thanks dude. The Sard bumper that was on the car was bought by Phil aka MRV6 so will end up on Lucretia soon. (possibly the finest MK2 I have ever seen?!) One of his buddies from Twobrutal picked it up on Saturday. I can't wait to see it on his car - it was in great condition and fit like a glove so should look fantastic when resprayed black and on his car.

Just after he paid a deposit I got a PM from a guy in Holland asking if he could import it! Mental! Would have cost him a fortune!

Looking good Earl - must be a very firm ride though at that height?! Yours is highly tuned if I remember rightly?

As we were saying the other day there can only be a handful of yellow REV3+ turbos in the UK. I've seen one in the flesh (which I nearly bought), plus yours, plus Rash's new one, plus maybe another 2 others on PH or Ebay.

Mine is the only REV4 on IMOC according to our member list and I have asked on the OC but no-one else on there seems to know of any yellow rev4 turbos.

Its a nice feeling to own one thats a rarity and is why I am so mad at the bodyshop as I want her to be immaculate.

Thanks Phil. I'll get there in the end hopefully!
