[All] [Generic] ipod headunits?

Post by ^Trickster^ »

Im looking for a headunit that has a ipod connector and will actually control the ipod, like choosing songs and albumns directly from the headunit instead of having to access the ipod.

I have it connected to my headunit at the moment with aux leads but it a nightmare going through the songs etc.

I have found this one from halfords, still trying to find others.

Any advice here?

I work in the audio section of Halfords as an installer/sales adviser (weekend job) and I could not let you but that Ripspeed CMR 3000. We may be a isolated occurance but we have had nothing but problems with those units coming back to be replaced/repaired. If you head in to the store now there is a kenwood unit at ~130 that is far superior. if you got the money my choice would be the Alpine 9850ri for ~200 as they are a full speed unit no interface box necessary thus allowing a quicker usage of your iPod.

I have the Alpine unit also, I keep the control box in the glove box with the ipod when connected. I do tend to just select an album before I set out and Im set. I dont tend to be in the car for longer than half hour or so atm so it suits me.

Scrolling is a bit of a pain with the horizontal touch pad bar (allthough nice and gimmicky) which is a bit annoying in the mr2 as bumps make my finger jump!!

Trouble is that I'm already at 58 Gb so hardly any space to include some playlists.....seems like a suitable excuse to buy an 80 Gb player!

I'm also looking for something to plug either my iPod Touch or iPod Video 30GB into - ideally will just leave the 30GB in the glovebox and control everything via the head unit.

I've been looking at the Alpine XDA Xxxx series of head units.

I don't need a CD player (I don't have CD's generally and theres an existing 10disc changer in the car if I need it anyways).

Anyone know if these are any good?

Cheers

Ahoy, I work for Halfords and spend most my time dealing with numpties in the audio department...so get to mess about with the units a fair bit.

Best advice is to buy Alpine. I could give you a big speil about all the different models but Alpine are the best for iPod units...FACT!

Their search/scroll menu's are much easier to use than all the rest.

Also the returns figures are comfortingly low.

Only issues we've seen with the Alpines is some of the older-generation (3rd Generation Ipod's and lower) aren't 100% compatible - they still work, but one or two of the functions aren't supported. I'm confident that Alpine have remedied this with the latest Summer2008 range.

A couple of the latest Alpine units we stock have no CD player whatsoever as they are completely iPod driven - so doublecheck before you buy if it's an issue to you.

Avoid Ripspeed branded stuff like the plague.

If I were to be in the market for a new I-pod friendly unit then I'd be looking at an Alpine ALP-IDAX100.

When I got my headunit (Alpine CDA 9882Ri) around 3 months ago I didn't really think about it & just got a head unit with a CD player/radio & I-pod useability. The thinking behind this was that I thought I'd use a few CD's in the car.

But, I've not used one CD yet, & I use my I-pod all the time.

So if you've got an I-pod & have all your tunes on your I-pod then I'd personally go for one of these babies from Alpine:

ALP-IDAX100
ALP-IDAX200

Hope that helps :?: :D

We've got double din spaces...so I'd go for a double din, want the tv/dvd option anyway so I have something to do when it's quiet at work.

Alpine IVA-W200Ri

Check out this beauty, flush tv's look great on the MR2 but £250-£300 2nd hand on ebay.
