Its a lot more than just petrol prices that are contributing to mk2 prices going through the floor:
Age ie they are getting old
Expensive parts you can buy one cheap but the parts running costs will quickly make it expensive to run.
Expensive to insure
Practicality
You are of course right. With fuel becoming so expensive it really is becoming more of a factor these days.

I remember never worrying about previous cars and fuel consumption but it really is something I cannot overlook anymore.

Age- Yes they're getting on now but despite that they're still reliable if looked after.
Expensive parts- Actually I find the parts fairly cheap considering, many of the normal wear and tear bits only cost about 10-15% more than your average hatchback.
Expensive to insure- The turbo maybe but you just need to shop around.
N/A's are cheap enough.
Practicality- Erm yeah okay no rear seats but these cars have a fair amount of luggage space really.
No good if you have kids though.
Fuel- 25-27mpg for turbo and 30-32mpg for N/A.
When you consider the performance the figures are quite good really.
Okay they're poor compared to modern TDI's but these are sportscars.

For once i agree with Lauren, There knocking on a bit now but there also not a paticlarly desirable car either so they wont hold a premium..
.
.
to many knocking around aswell so you can be picky when buying one.

.say a Rev 3+ Turbo T-Bar with low mileage that hasn't been thrashed.
Now they're becomming a little harder to find and as such, I can see them continuing to warrant a premium.

True, if you're looking for a tin top NA in no specific colour, then its definately a buyers market.
