when fitting the short shifter the bearings arnt in the car they are in the engine bay

when you got the long plastic bit off follow the two selector cables and have a look through where they go and you can see where they fit

Got it in, Its quite easy to do as well :thumleft:

Re assembling the gear stick bit is probably the hardest part, saying that its not realy hard just a little fiddly.

One thing you need to do is dremel a bit of the gear stick as it catches on part of the gear change bit when selecting 1st (pics below of the bit)

Dremel the circled bit, probably easier doing it when its in the car then you can work out how much you need to dremel but put something around the area to stop the dust / filings etc (as you can see I didnt and look at it everywhere :oldtongue: ) -

You need to dremel untill this bit doesnt touch like this -

All back together

nice :thumleft: Did you make a mess like me or did you cover the area up before dremelling? .

Let me know how it feels after doing the bearings as I think the feel is great already with the short shifter :D

Also, Did you get covered in grease taking the gear stick unit apart / rebuilding it?

i bought a puma gearknob on ebay for £10 and re-tapped it to fit, i do like the puma knob's and the numbers are in the right places aswell a few scratches on it but i might give it a polish. fitted my cable bearings very easy to fit i didnt take off wheel like it was said in instructions done mine on ramps didnt need to touch wheel 15-20 min job very easy only cost £10.80 for bearing aswell gearchange is very precise and not sloppy now :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

The ebay replicas are B&M style which are shorter than TRD shortshifters.

My one is about as short as the the original posters but I bought a longer TRD gearknob so its not too bad...any shorter I can imagine is a pain to shift with! I had to change my stock gearknob as it was a lot of effort changing gears.

are the trd ones the only available kits that are reduced throw but not a midgit stick.

im not sure im too keen on the "short" short shifters, .........kinda reminds me of a nasty pic a friend had on his phone.......involved a fat man :?

i think its the spacer that alters the throw so i cant see why you couldnt just use the spacer and keep standard gearshifter. £30 for a spacer is a bit expensive though :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

thats where most of us got ours from quite good just you have to modify the stick by grinding a bit away because it fouls on the rods, easy to do though better done out of car though, and prepare to get messy the grease is horrible and getting plastic cover off the ball joint is tricky, but otherwise a doddle invest in the bearings aswell makes conversion even better and only a tenner :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

1)remove ashtray 2 screws there
2)take off gearknob unclip gaiter take off
3) halfway down gearbox tunnel is a screw each side remove those
4) flip both seats forward there is 3 screws each side of the cubby hole i think remove those
5) flip both covers for cubby hole theres 4 screws there 2 at top 2 at bottom cubby hole comes off now and so will gearbox centre part
6)pull out r clip that secures one of rods undo nut on other one there 2 securing plates that hold cables in at the back these pull up with some pliers or moll grips
7) undo 4 i think 15mm bolts that secure in gearstick mecinism whole thing comes out in one bit
8) theres another 4 bolts that hold gearstick to metal plate undo them in the kit you get 4 longer ones it all seperates now
9) tricky and messy bit prise out gearstick from plastic holder very messy and tricky takes probably the most time, get yourself some grease i used multi purpose from halfords nice big dollop on the ball of new shift press into place, this is also very tricky as buy this time you are covered in grease
10) place blue spacer at the bottom of the plate and line up the 4 holes place newbolts through new shifter, spacer and metal plate and do up
11) place it back into car and see if it fails on rods if so mark out where and grind till it doesnt fail we all seemed to have this trouble then reverse all points to refit job done took me 40 mins with grinding
hope this helps you feel free if anyone wants to place this on knowlege base :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

I fitted one of the e bay ones as pictured on my rev 1, it was a doddle to fit (and so are the rear bushes)it sat a lot shorter than standard .
But the writing on the lever wouldn't line up when the knob was screwed back on ,so had to get a knob without any writing
my standard rev 2 is about the same height as the modded one?
