[Mk2] [NA] G-limited speedo dials

Post by t-bar89 »

Hi,

I've got a rev 2 import and I'm not happy with the speedo. It only goes up to 110mph as it's an import which doesn't bother me too much as I rarely do that sort of speed! The annoying thing though is that its seriously out of calibration! When I'm doing 70 mph on my sat nav the speedo reads 82. if i'm doing 30 then it reads 36 ish!

Jut wondering if this is common with the imports or all mk2s? If so is there anything I can do to re-calibrate it?

The other problem with the 110mph clocks is that I can't seem to find anywhere a speedo dial kit (ie lockwood or speed hut) that can be fitted.

Any info or advice appreciated.

Regards, Pete :thumleft:

You need to either:
1) get a speed delimiter and 180mph dial faces
2) get a 160mph UK spec speedo and transplant into your instrument cluster, then get 160mph dial faces

Option 2 will not delimit.

G-Limited MR2

Post by Amebb »

Hi there
I have been reading your Posts regarding delimiting Imported MR2's etc.

Unfortunatly my MR2 is an automatic. Non Turbo........ boring really...

I ordered a Delimiter of someone on Ebay. They sent me diagrams on how to do this but the diagrams were for a Manual MR2 and NOT automatic.

I have found the speed sensor on the gear box that i need to work with.

It has three wires, a positive, a negative and a signal sender.....

Can anyone please tell me what wire is what...?

Obviously if i mess with the wrong wire the dam thing wont work.

Is there anyone who knows the colours of the wires and what they are for ...?

Thank you Guys!

Sounds like you've had new faces put onto the original (180kph) speedo faces, and when they've put the speedo needle back on it hasn't gone on right.

FWIW my old Rev2 was just as bad, over-reading by 8-10mph - You just get used to it.

Car speedos have to be accurate in the range 0- 10% over-reading - I get hire cars travelling for work from time to time and fairly much all except those with Digital speedos over-estimate the road speed when compared to a GPS, which is typically accurate to 0.1 mph

Unfortunately the automatic car has TWO speed sensors, one for the gearbox and one for the road speed. If you fit the ebay converter (moves the limit to 180mph by converting kmph to mph), it doesn't do anything with the gearbox speed sensor. Your speedo will read in mph, but if you ever drive your car hard, (hey it's a sportscar) it won't change up and will hit the rev limiter instead (embarrasing) and your power steering will stay on until 80mph. The only way forward is to buy a clamping delimiter converter, where a separate signal is sent to the speedo (mph) and ECU (KMPH capped at 170kmph).
