no idea. cant see anything in the manual. follow the wires, could be an alarm unit or part of an alarm unit.

big black box you say?
hmm maybe its not an alarm then. have you got a sub behind that seat too? could it be an amp?

if it looks OEM, it is most likely the radio reciever for remote central locking (an Option)

have you 2 lines in the windscreen if so it is the amplifier for am radio signal mine has this & the amp is always bolted under drivers seat hope this helps...i also have remote central locking from factory & this reciever is behind the dashboard not under the seat

I have never seen a non-Japanese windscreen without the AM aerial.
And I've only seen one MR2 with the OEM box under the seat - that was the reciever for the central locking.

Are you sure you are not confusing the central locking relay box that is behind the dash RHS?
I guess there have been so many factory options for the Mk2, it could be anything anywhere.

Does it look like this

Image

in which case it's an amp for the stereo I believe.

If it looks like this

Image

then it's to do with the remote central locking.

The active system amps are behind the side panel trim.

The 'Premium Stereo' was a popular option... Toyota would not just sling an amp loosely under the seat!

Why would an Amp have an aerial connection?

My money is still on a remote control application.
