[Mk2] [NA] Big dilema... need help

Post by pintovit »

I'll try to put the problem as simple as possible because things are getting very messy in my mind now... :(

Background:
1990 rev 1 N/A
Can buy in the UK since a friend takes care of shipment on a wallet friendly environment. \:D/
Always wanted a lightweight flywheel and LSD...

Problems:
- clutch slipping badly
- 2nd gear crunches.

Solutions from less expensive to burning money (or not):
1st:
- buy a toyota clutch kit and fix the slipping thing
- live with it since if taken easily it changes without crunching

2nd:
- buy a toyota clutch kit and fix the slipping thing
- get someone to fix the box (some guys charge just for replying to the quote question   )

3rd:
- buy a toyota clutch kit and fix the slipping thing
- buy a used NA clutch (waiting for one since June  )

4th:
- buy everything tubby (gearbox, flywheel, clutch and all required bits and pieces - need some guidance here!!!) - GTS-ANDY jumps to mind...

What would you guys do?

I'm not swimming in money but I recon I could spend £500 in parts...

Thanks A LOT guys... My brain is melting on this specially since I have the car parked for a while trying to figure this out...

Regards,
Vítor

rogue do a refurbished turbo gearbox for £500
sure you could get them to refurb an na box for less

i got a second hand NA box from rouge for £200 or 250 i think. was about 3 years ago now.

has been fine ever since.
have you checked your gear linkage? some people have found that they have a really sloppy box before replacing the bushes in this. i'm led to bleieve that it can make the world of difference. not sure if its enough to cure a crunch though.

new cluch is a must. cant use a worn out one, whats the point. most motor factors will be able to get you a clutch kit for a lot less than toyota will.

Thanks for the advice guys...

I think I'm going to try the last approach... "Upgrading" to a turbo box.

People are breaking mkII turbos now and then. Already made some contacts... Lets see what comes out of that.

Main thing is that I want an LSD and that comes standard on those boxes and sometimes one might get lucky to find one with an upgraded aftermarket one. Andy box just got sold with a TRD LSD for 200...
Also the shorter gear ratios can only help on an NA. :)

I'm going for flywheel, clutch, gearbox, hubs, shafts, clutch master cylinder and gear linkage cables. Does anyone knows if this is the complete shopping basket for this modification or is there anything else required?

Thanks once again for your feedback guys.

personally. i'd be very doubtful you'd have enough power to justify a lsd on an na motor, apart from which not all tubby boxes have the lsd...never mind.

so i'd say do the flywheel and clutch from a tubby, but stick with your own box till a rear clip comes avaliable, cough, i have one maybe coming up,

not saure about the splines though, you might have to use an na plate and bearing with a tubby cover??? check with those more knowledgeable than me first

iirc you need hubs and driveshafts to marry up to the tubby box which afik is taller ratios than an na box.

Don't bother with turbo box. My brother fitted one to his rev3 NA, was useless. Gearing all wrong. It was an lsd one as well.

If you fit a turbo box with LSD won't you need the LSD-length driveshafts to go with it?

Get 2nd hand box, take to recon man, pay him to recon it, then fit it. Take YOUR box to recon man, get him to fit that, then have spare or sell it to recoup some of the money!

Buy genuine toyota clutch, or RPS Street Max 324lbs one, they drive like road, but on that power will last ages :)

Gears are taller?!

It makes sense but I could sware they were shorter. That changes everything. Really don't need the taller gears with this sort of power... :(

Ok then... forgetting about the LSD... :? (for now! A NA with cams is perfectly able to shift the LSD - saw it in youtube and there is a post were about it).

Buying the Toyota clutch kit, the Fidanza flywheel and going to check my gearbox (the RPS one I believe is overkill for a 158bhp N/A)...

You guys are life savers. Thanks a lot. :thumleft:

This is what I gathered after browsing around the forum:

Tubby
1:3.23
2:1.91
3:1.26
4:0.918
5:0.731
Final:4.285

N/A
1st: 3.285
2nd: 1.960
3rd: 1.322
4th: 1.028
5th: 0.820
Final Drive Ratio: 3.944

I'm no expert but... Multiplying each gear for the final drive I gathered:
............N/A.........Tubby
1st: 12,95604 13,84055
2nd: 7,73024 8,18435
3rd: 5,213968 5,3991
4th: 4,054432 3,93363
5th: 3,23408 3,132335

So it seams that the tubby has clearly shorter 1st and 2nd. The 3rd and 4th are almost even and then a longer 5th...
If my math is ok... I really don't know if things can be calculated like this...

Anyway, I'm going to try to get the info from some expert.

Thanks!
