[MK1] New Member with SC Conversion, now with added pics!

Post by Jack_Faust »

Hey All,

I've only just joined this site as I have been browsing for info about the Conversion mah car is undergoing. Thought I might as well join and post about it too!

I have an Ice Blue (or whatever the colour is) T-Bar 1989 MR2 Mkib

The engine is the AE92 SC Conversion from the good folk at Fensport.

Currently also have an air induction, stainless steel magnex exhaust, grooved discs, some reasonable ice (need more bass), short shift, indiglo dials (not fitted yet) with the aluminium cover (fitted, prolly the wrong way round to do it).

I'm not a mechanic but I can do some things, usually badly! Am looking forward to driving it. When it's out I'll post pics if I get a warm feeling (hopefully not me weeing myself).

Future plans - fix the fecking leaky t-bar (possibly off centre fixing points?), fix the fecking dodgy cog in the drivers electric window, install the fecking indiglo dials (think that'll be a pain).

Also poly euro bushes, spark plugs, ht leads, large pulley kit, shocks etc. bar at the front, bodywork, subwoofer and prolly more!

Any advice on this kind of conversion? Needs some tuning any recommendations in the Surrey/Hants area?

SC engine lids are like hens teeth - don't think I've ever seen one for sale. You may end up having to modify your NA lid to give enough flow through the intercooler.

Yup - best bet is a SC being broken to find one. Good luck getting it all sorted out, some pics would be good :thumleft:

I've seen a couple here and there, I picked one up for my 1.5 for £100 from memory..

Superchargedsam probably (prolly?!) has one spare. Try the Items Wanted section :thumleft:

Hey thanks for the replies so far, will take a look at the wanted section.

Yuppers as soon as I've picked it up there will be happy snappy piccies! Someone reccomended http://www.tcbparts.co.uk/ as a potential place also. Have yet to ring to find out.

Also have seen a fan set to fit in one if I find it that sound pretty groovy, http://www.revision6.com/forms/Product.aspx?ID=312 if a little pricy.

Have heard that the scoops on the top of the bay are little more then aesthetics, am interested to do something like Lauren on trackdayqueen.com but we'll see.

Cheers, & have fun!

People have tried them on SCs in the past, and found they don't help - in fact they can actually reduce the natural flow

As standard the scoops don't do anything, as they are open at the bottom - all they do is spray rainwater over the fusebox. However with a little modification they can be effective in delivering cool air where it is needed - under the intercooler. Following some logging of intercooler temps recently, the consensus was that they can improve cooling. Here's a pic of the underside of mine

Oh god.

The wiring just has been a nightmare for this one. Stuart's doing his best and pulling them through but apparantly I have a 4agz ECU and very few wiring diagrams match it. I'm not sure what the differnec eis between that and the 4agz'E' is, Stuart reckoned it might be a weird import somewhere.

Well it's progressing if anyone has that or the engine bay diagrams that would help loads.

Photo's still to come!

12 wires to go......

Thanks,

Jack

Hope you get it sorted soon :thumleft:

My conversion still isn't on the track - problems with silicone induction piping squashing under vacuum, a few rust holes to weld, brakes to bleed, front wing to replace, etc.

I bypassed that problem, and fitted a chargecooler instead of an intercooler, and kept the NA lid

An excellent conversion to do I think!

I believe a member here is getting some SC lids build that will fit the N/A catch assembly, worth thinking about, chargecooler sounds like fun too.

I have a similar kind of issue with the paint spray but the last person who had a go found the correct Toyota Ice Blue to use and it looks rather good, does mean that I have slightly different variations in colour as well though :(

Stuart is doing an excellent job so far and it is a tough job he's been given! Lookijg forward to getting it back, probably a few weeks time after me hols....! :)

By the way, TCB parts are very good!

Chaps name is Trevor and he'll sort you out whatever you need!

Postage was £10 from Cornwall to Essex when I bought a wing from them

I know of a SC lid for sale, shipping may be a bit high, but the selling price is 75.00 quid. PM me for details if you are interetsed.

Hi all,

Right this has not got any further for some time due to issues with getting a spark.

I was wondering if anyone who has had this done via the Fensport kit be willing to talk\email with Stuart who's doing the wiring. He mostly appears to have got it all up and running, the engine turns over however he cannot get a spark out of it.

This is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare for all concerned and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the replies so far and for your patience,

Jack

Three main areas he needs to check. Details below are from my AE101 engine, but the AE92 one is very similar, though some of the colour codes are different. If he’s unsure of the pinout on the ECU, the names of the pins are printed on the circuit board

1)

Main power connector – this is the 4 pin grey connector below the engine bay fusebox. On the MR2 this connector has two power cables from the engine loom which come direct from the alternator/battery +12V line, the black/white starter wire, and a blue/? One which goes to the engine bay fan.

This is the equivalent main power umbilical from the AE101 loom - normally this would feed power to the various fuseboxes outside of the engine bay, as the engine loom included the engine bay fusebox. However I've hacked the Corolla fusebox up, so all that remains is the fusible link block, so this umbilical now feeds power to the MR2's engine bay fusebox via the grey connector. The thick white wire comes direct from the alternator - the thinner one used to come via the Corolla's AM1 fusible link, but has been reconnected on the feed side of the fusible link block instead, so is also a direct feed from the alternator ( the MR2 loom has two similar wires feeding the fusebox that are joined within the loom ).

Image

Black/Orange is the power to the ignitor and injectors from the ignition switch, and the black/white wire is the starter wire from the ignition switch. The starter wire connects directly to the same colour one from the MR2 umbilical ( grey connector below fusebox ) while the bk/or one is patched to the output from the engine main relay via the Molex boot connector.

2)

Fusible link block - the ABS one has been removed, leaving just the one that sites between the alternator and battery in the engine loom. Alternator side of this connect to the two white cables in the power umbilical above.

Image

3)

The hard bit – the Molex connector in the boot

Image

Looking at front of the connector, 3 large pins down middle designated A,B, and C while the 3 pins across the bottom are designated D, E, and F. Smaller pins are designated 1 – 16 in 4 rows of 4 left to right. The intermediate empty rows on the connector are ignored, as are any pins that aren't connected.

1 - +12V from Inj relay to injectors, Bk/W - not needed as the AE101 uses a common feed for injectors and igniter, and I'm using the igniter feed for this. I may use this one to power the chargecooler water pump.

3 - Oil pressure gauge, Y/Bk connects to Y wire from AE101 pressure sender

4 - Engine check lamp, G/W - connects to R/Y wire from AE101 ECU 22P connector

6 - Alternator, Bk/Y - connects to Y from alternator

7 - Water temp gauge, Y/G - connects to Y/G wire from water temp sensor near dipstick

9 - G/R wire doesn't connect to anything

10 - Permanent +12V to BATT connection on ECU, W/R - connects to R/W wire from 22P ECU connector

11 - Vent fan warning light, Bl/W - stays as part of AW11 boot loom

12 - Speed sensor, V/W - connects to V/W on AE101 loom. Also stays connected to vent fan ECU via AW11 boot loom

14 - Fuel Pump from circuit opening relay, Bl - Bl/Bk wire from relay ( I need to check this one ) and FP pin in diagnostic socket

15 - Stop light switch, Bk/W - connects to G/W from ELS1 on ECU

16 - Tachometer, Bk - connects to Bk wire from igniter and IG- on diagnostic socket

A – Not used

B - +12V from Engine Main relay, Bk/R - to Bk/Or wire on engine bay umbilical, feeds both igniter and injectors. Also connected to Bk/R on engine loom ( used to go to AE101 EFI relay ) to give switched +12V to ECU.

C - Alternator, Y - to R/Bl wire from alternator

D - Idle up diodes, Bk - to Bk wire to ELS2 on ECU

E - Earth on rear loom, W/Bk - will be used for various ECU Earths, also connects to vent fan ECU

F - Vent fan relay, remains as part of AW11 boot loom, Bk/G

I’ve also got a load of spare wires from the engine loom that are next to the ECU plugs – I assume these are for things like lights etc as they aren’t needed for the engine to run.

Hope this helps

Martin
