let me sum this up....this is my profile of mr 172(drag monster) clio owner....

hes probably a charva

he definatly doesnt know what hes talkin about.

he drives a french piece of cr@p

he claims its the best hot hatch.. hmm focus rs, audi s3, golf r32. need i say more

he hasnt read the unbiased figuers available from the web which back up mr2t being far more capable than the clio 172.

he will be repairing his car more than driving it

nobody will turn there head to look at his car when he drives down the high street

he's only here to stir things up and has never considerd buying a proper drivers car

and he has no balls. if he did he would organise a meeting on the strip with some of us to prove his claims..

one last note i wouldnt have a clio as there french pieces of unreliable cr@p but the clio williams does looks fantastic. i know its old but i love it..

well looking at those stats the clio is only very slightly quicker than an mr2 N/A, guess this means us N/A drivers should be able to wipe the floor with you turbo drivers with only a very pitiful 6 seconds 0-100 speed, a meer 30% quicker.

Got to say though i do love the v6 clio and the williams, fantastic looking cars.

Oh and the Renault 5 Turbo 2 was the best hot hatch ever.

You cant criticise all fench cars. I had a gold 106 gti. 160bhp and lowered. It wasnt as fast a a turbo but handled great. In fact it was much easier and faster round corners as it seemed to have soo much feel and grip.

I had a clio 182 challenge me to a race. By the time i hit 5 th gear i could hardly see him

Hmm , anyone think maybe 'C Reedit' has thrown himself off a building?? after reading some of your opinions on the clio and the fact he has not posted a reply in quite some time ???

well if not............

i know a good song that relates to the clio.. its by 'Adam Sandler' and its called 'piece of xxxx car.

go download it and listen.. Cracks me up :P

'C Reedit' maybe if you sold your car for a 1.3 SR Nova, you could give the Bugatti veron a run for its money!!! make sure its the 1.3sr tho and not the 1.4 !!!

DING!

I too find it hard to believe that people are drawn in so easily by obvious trolls.

Ian Geary wrote:My old uni flat mate has a Clio Sport 182.

We've not "raced" (don't like the thought of 2 powerful cars driving within inches of each other seeing who can do the stupidest overtake) but we have driven each others cars around a bit to see what they're up to.

He was quite taken back by the punch delivered by a decent high pressure turbo from fairly low in the rev range. It's far more than the build up you get from taking a clio right up to the red line, although you shouldn't mistake the clio for being slow in absolute terms. It does get rapidly to illegal speeds.

Just not as rapidly as the tubby, so in a straight line situation I'd have it beat every single time until my clutch foot fell off.

However, in terms of handling, this clio was planted. It was far more confident negotiating bends than my 2.

When I say it was confident - I don't mean the car of course - they don't have feelings apparently.

I mean as I driver I was more confident about pushing it, and so was he. My MR2 has koni shocks, oe springs, standard 15s with T1Rs (boo hiss) with a fair amount of tread left, but there's no way i'd go into a fairly tight bend at more than 50 in the dry - far less in the wet.

The clio is extremely chuckable, and just eats these corners up. This could well have lead to the situation we're hearing about.

Also,

don't forget we don't have any details of this race whatsoever. It was hardly a measured 1/4 mile sprint.

I'm imagining this chap has a fairly stress free job in a warehouse somewhere (apologies any warehouse operatives), so the lunchtime sprint was probably around the industrial estate - perhaps to the burger van and back?

Given these will only have roads of a few hundred yards, there would be very little opportunity to regain ground should a mistake be made, notwithstanding the driving skills of the clio owner at recovering from his inevitable wheelspin.

In addition, a speck in the mirror probably means about 3 foot behind - we've all done the odd bit of exaggerating in our time.

On the flip side, to blame a broken tubby does sound somewhat lame. The guy has witnessed this himself first hand (unless he's just wasting our time - a risk I'm willing to take), and no amount of disgruntled noises are going to make someone disregrd it.

I've snuck in front of a 350z and a Caymen S before now - do you think I'm ever going to let an owner forget this if I meet them? No chance, despite them being one off, even freak occurances.

Would I then log on to their forums and say "I'm not buying a Caymen S because my MR2 made it look like a tractor"? - er, no.

Bottom line, this chap has made his own mind up.

If he doesn't want to join the MR2 commuity, I'm not going to loose too much sleep. ;)

have a nice evening

Ian

So you've been infront of a 350z...so would most tubbys. I'd beaten many of them they're only just short of 300bhp and not as much torque as the tubby. If they have turbo kits then that's another matter lol.

That guy is defo on a wind up mission. I had a 182 before the tubby, anybody who knows what they are talking about knows the truth, end of story. :)

The car aint bad. anything that can lap brands in 53's with under 200 bhp which turns out to be faster than quite a few cars in time attack with most of them having around the 500bhp mark is pretty impressive.

i'd love to see the average clio sport owner lap the hatch in 53s
there are some great cars in time attack. shame a lot of the drivers aint getting 100% out of them.

Ok Guys,

I decided to put this theory to test. I have a REV1 tubby and my mate has a clio 172..my car is an N/A. 0-60 test was taken and he is a hot head driver unlike me. Well all I can say is the clio did not win. I think the person who he raced against either drove it easy or didnt drive at all..what a joke if anyone thinks a clio 172 could win...forget the fact even if it could for gods sake its a french car and clio..can't even pull the ladies let alone a race against the MR2!
