[Mk2] [Turbo] Spal fans - diy kit

I've been noticing that it doesnt seem to take very much to get what seem like very hot engine bay temps - engine lid is too hot to touch after a bit of 'spirited' driving. And was wondering if its worth putting a 10" spal fan or similar in the more open part of the rain shield? Anyone done something like this?

Yes i've seen the rogue one - im just looking for a cheaper way of doing things.

I was gonna knock one of these up as all you'd really need is some sheet metal and a couple of spal fans. The KORacing ones are a lot simpler in design to the rogue ones, and I think run bigger fans.

Due to time constraints I got myself a rogue fan kti, Had to rewire it so the connectors we're exposed, replaced both ends of the hydraulic lifter after they both sheared, and will also be getting the relay replaced for a good one. Will have to wait and see how effective it is, but it should pull the air alright in the end.

OK, I don't have a tubby but I noticed after I changed my engine that my engine lid gets roasting as well. I've got a tubby lid and plan on installing a single fan (maybe a 7 or 8"") so it comes on when the car's stationary.

The tubby kits are way over the top for what I need but I'm sure I can do better for the money as well. I need to find someone who can roll me a thin aluminium or steel sheet so I get a nice lip round the edge first -think the guy who made my sills can help.

I might contact your man at 3s as well to see how he did the metal sheet part.

I'll post up pics in my garage when it's done.

Just so you know, the corner pieces on the rogue ones are welded on and then ground down on the outer edge. Its then all powder coated.

rogue ones fit very well and look very professional....

if you are going to install just one fan, you really need it on the drivers side of the engine bay.....
my fans expells (spelling) loads of heat, but it definatly is warmer on the drivers side....

i got my rogue fans secondhand, with an uprated relay and fuses, i spliced into my IC SPAL fan as well, so i got that sucking, and the rogue fans blowing, lol ....all controlled by a switch, which is also wired to the AIT lid sensor, so if i forget to turn the switch on, the sensor will take over when its hot and turn them on automatically (like stock).

It's a very good forum i think, anyways.. would be good for you to read. Can make you own vent system for 170 dollar. So like 80 pounds?

yeh but i bet those fans dont cost what they cost in the US....
if there SPAL fans, of that size your looking at £60+ each.

We did design a "Basic" fan kit that was just a flat sheet with no hydraulic lifting arm that was significantly cheaper than the "Professional" model that we currently sell, but nobody ordered them so we never put them into production!

Patrick, just to reply to my "I think I can do better for the money" statement; your kit looks great but it's too much of an overkill for me with the double fans I think -I'm going to have a bash myself until you convince me to fit that turbo next year -then I might go for the twin fan kit.
