Alternator woes - those warning lights again

Post by rockatansky »

Last week the charging warning lights came on. (Battery and engine fan)

Tested the battery output @ 13.5V (engine off)

Tested output of alternator @ 12V (engine running)

Also shorted the voltage regulator with no increase in voltage.

Concluded that the alternator was shot. Got hold of a s/h guaranteed alt (from Cilica, 55amp). Fitted it yesterday, fired up the engine, no warning lights and ¾ output reading on dash voltmeter. All good….

Did a couple miles stop/start journeys last night, all fine. Jumped back into car to go home but warning lights stayed on after start up. Drove home (5 miles) fine with warning lights staying on but voltmeter fluctuating between ½ and ¾ reading.

Just tested battery @ 13.5V.

Started up and Alt V went from 13.5V dropping to 12.8V over a couple of mins.

Is the s/h alternator suspect too? Why would the voltmeter fluctuate, loose/weak connection? Car still drives fine with voltmeter not dropping below ½ way mark, although I haven’t chanced a longer drive.

It has a black box attached to the side with a connection to the alt output. Told it was a suppressor for the radio? Did not attach it because previous alternator did not have one and radio works fine. Should it be connected or just for Cilica’s?

All help appreciated. Thank you.

Somethings up with the IC regualtor, could be the second hand one is faluty aswell or could be something on the car causing them to fail.
