[Mk2] [Turbo] Idle issue

Post by THE DUKE »

Ok long story short.

My car stood for a while (about a year) now im about to get it back on the road, changed a few bits around but im having a bit of a problem with my idle.

The car does not like starting at the mo, you need to give it gas to get her fired up.. Once running and revving high the car is fine.

At low revs 2000 rpm or less the car has real problems trying to hold any kind of revs and trys to cut out. It will not idle at all!!

Also at low revs even if you give it gas it will not hold any sort of smooth rev line, its drops off and picks up all the time.

I have changed, plugs, fuel filter, rotor arm, dizzy cap, tested leads, put fresh v power in, checked fr air leaks, tested compression, checked for error codes. All fine and working well.

The only odd thing i have noticed is at the moment the cat 1 alarm keeps chirping at me and sounding when you leave the car. Im not 100% sure this is connected to the issue as the alarm would cut the engine totally if activated. I have contacted Sigma who supply the alram and they are going to get back to me..

Any help, info or input will be greatfully received..

Cheers

Hi mate,

I recently cured an idle problem by changing the Idle Control Valve. I had different symptons to yourself - it was hunting when warm - but it is something that you have not checked?

Do a search on here, but it was something like.....

pull the plug off the ICV and he revs should go to a little over 1k. Put plug back on and symptoms re-appear then it is the ICV.

Also, you can check the resistance of it by going between the centre pin on the ICV itself and the outer pins one at a time and it should be about 20 ohms IIRC. There is plenty of info on here about the ICV, and the BGB online has a step by step on changing and checking it.

May be worth a try?

Defo sounds like the icv I would also be checking the throttle position switch its located on the side of the throttle body.

The icv is located underneath the throttle body.

Have you taken the car for a decent run yet? By decent I mean 10 - 20 miles of fairly brisk driving. Since it has been stood for a year, a run like this may be all it needs......
