getting into mk1 racing How??

Post by turtle3 »

Ok i bought a mk1 for my wife, cos she always wanted a red sports car, I liked it so much I bought one myself (in need of a lot of work to get roadworthy), I love driving these cars I used to road race bikes and thought cars couldnt be as much fun but after driving the mr2 I am thinking of getting into racing them, These cars handle like they are on rails!! well ahead of their time,,, what are modern Mr2s like If these old uns are so good, ive only driven mk1`s?? my question is how easy hard is it to get into racing them and is it expensive?? Is there a stock division where you can turn up and race??,, thanks

Ie the MR2 Challenge. I raced in it last year. Its in roadsports under 750MC.

Prep a car for 2.5K if you do it yourself.

A full season would cost about 2.5K on top of that.

If you haven't raced before about a grand to get started (suits, boots, helmet, gloves ARDS, racing club membership etc).

If you reckon they handle like they are on rails then you aren't going fast enough. ;) You are talking about roadholding not handling.

All racing is expensive in all honesty. Budget on 5K including car for a season. They do do hire cars £3600 all in for 6 races (kind of a mini-season).

Its easy to get into racing providing you can afford it. All it takes is money.

The MK3 is a good car handling wise. The MK2 less so.

Mk1 MR2s race in the MR2 Challenge (within the Roadsports category) of 750 motorclub (www.750mc.co.uk).

They started the challenge last year, and have already had one race this year - with about 15 MR2s on the grid. Their next race is at Brands hatch on the weekend of the 23rd/24th April.

The cars are sort of stock - there are rules and regs for the formula telling you what you can and can't do, but you will need to get a 'sealed engine' from red dragon automotive (www.reddragonautomotive.com, or www.mr2racing.com).
If you use your own car that is.... you will also need to fit a roll cage, seat harness, get the Yoko tyres, etc etc....

I'm sure other peeps actually racing in the challenge will pop along soon enough to fill you in properly.

To actually get racing, you could buy a race prepped car for £3000 ish, you'll also need to do an ARDS test (see 750 mc for 'get racing' info) which costs £150 - £250 depending on where you do it. You then have MSA fees, 750 mc reg fees, and fees for each event (its between £150 and £200 ish for another formula - for roadsports i'm not sure), and also you'll need to trailer your car there.

So relatively cheap ;)

If you haven't done it before, I think mr2mk1club(.com) have a car that you could get a drive in...although you'll still need the ARDS licence....
Reddragon also seem to do drives too...

Something i should add is that if you haven't done any racing before is to take your road car on a few trackdays and see what you think. Track driving is quite different from road driving and its a good idea to get a feel for it and get used to driving at track speeds.

Come to Brunty and bag a ride with a few of the IMOC lot on 1st May at the TOC day.

We also have an IMOC trackday on 3rd September so it'd be worth getting booked up for that, see Motorsport section for details.
