It's a driving experience thread, we're talking about 530d BMW's, it moved up to 344bhp monster tuned diesel 535 ones (which are very fast). Not sure why you think I'm talking a talk I can't walk? I said the 530d would not be as fast as my car for example, and I said the M5 would beat the DMS which Johnny is disagreeing with, that's where we are up to in the discussion Michael - do keep up!! Perhaps an intercooler and re-map for your brain?

There's some good petrol vs diesel topics on the Pistonheads forums at the mo, kicked off by one member stating that the acceleration from his 1.9Tdi Audi was "immense"!
In fairness diesel tech has come on leaps and bounds thanks to the krauts, but most diesel cars are owned (in my experiance) by people who are mechanically ignorant (obviously not you though Johnny )and regard "TDI" "DTI" "DT" as indicating performance and prestige in the same manner as "GTI" "GT" "GTS" etc.
Diesel BMWs are fast, thats fact and judging by the figures posted earlier the 535DMS at least would certainly challenge most if not all early to mid 90s Jap performance cars.
However most Jap performance cars are far from standard, and often owned by enthusiasts who know how to extract the most from their motor which is probably less often the case amongst diesel drivers.

I fail to see why you are suddenly challenging *me* though, I'm simply amazed by your claims, if anything you amuse me, unlike some I'm not constantly posting 2p tales of the underdog MR2 beating exotica, I have nothing to prove, my Skoda doesn't have a chip on it's shoulder that it needs to look after

You are the one asking for 'evidence'. I am simply "telling tales" regarding my experiences with 530d BMW diesel cars. I've seen a lot on the road, some driven slowly, some driven fast, none of them are faster than my car. I can easily recognise them as I go by because they are the ones with "530d" emblazened on the tail.

YOU are asking for evidence dude! I am simply accepting that fact and offering dates when I am free to demonstrate. You are more than welcome to bring anything, or even come out for a spin. I love a good spirited drive, I don't (touchwood!) crash my car or drive dangerously, but I do enjoy my vehicle.

As I said to Aidy, there is nothing I enjoy more at the weekend than driving my car and grabbing some lunch somewhere new. I think you've got an image of me built up that is totally un-necessary.

I won't accept that a 530d will out drag a 250-odd bhp MR2 turbo which is being driven in the right gear - and for that I'm getting abuse?

just to clarify, i didnt say it beat me just that i was surprised how little i pulled on it plus i wasnt willing to keep my foot in on the m1 in still relatively busy traffic up to well over a ton but as we know most middle managers with BMW company cars have a speedoing exemption certificate..

As i've been involved in this thread - and been meaning to ask this for a while - we often hear of the mr2 beating off exotica that seems unreasonable etc. Not that im saying it shouldnt beat a big engine bmw diesel to 60, just that im aware that these cars have a hell of a shove when rolling, more than a lot of folks realise and i dont think that its an obvious thing.

Luthor - i'd be very happy to take you up on the offer of a demo - are you going to JAE? Your profile doesnt give too much away as to power mods, maybe my tubby is a little down on power - but its been RR'd at 288bhp. If you can give me a bit of a demo pm me or post here - not a confrontational post, im really just interested and love seeing other high performance '2s. Ditto to anyone else who owns a nice 3litre BMW diesel...

COOL!!! Let's go for a ride!! TBH I don't know what JAE is I go to trackdays and enjoy my local A and B roads. I've never been one for cruises or meets, I just want to drive the thing

It's getting it's gearbox done at the moment (hence this weekend was not on my dates list!!!) and the RPS clutch going in.

My focus has been on handling so far, to that end I've got it pretty well sorted, the LSD makes all the difference. It's not runing anywhere near 288bhp at the moment, probably 250/260, but that sees 5 dead 0-60 on the G-meter, and 6900rpm in top flat out (autobahn b4 the speed police get involved {going to France/Germany end of July too}) so there are still modern cars it will keep up with.

I think when you start to throw BHP at a tubbie, and compare it to modern cars, you can't stress enough how light the '2 is. 1260kg's really is nothing. Honda NSX supercar is 1300kg or so with 276bhp, so why would a 276bhp tubby not be the same performance? Fact is they are everything this side of 150mph, but it doesn't 'sound' or 'feel' right. Modern cars are SO heavy, they need all this torque and power just to move. Remember the new -vs- old Golf GTi test on top gear? Twice the weight, twice the power, the lighter one won the accelleration race. I think that's key. Anyhow, I'll find out what JAE is and go along!

I've got a 275bhp V6SC (a 700bhp V6 coming soon) and a 535d I can throw in the mix for demos.

My money is still on the 535d from a rolling start

can someone please setup a drag race between the 530d and a standard tubby rev3+ please. then put it to bed.

Then maybe run them round the track. I suspect the 2 should come out on top easily due to it being a love boat!
