No, a BMW Diesel *anything* would not beat a near 300bhp tubby. Not this side of the next ice age.

Like I said, perhaps a 5th gear roll-on. The diesel engines are still not flexible enough. Loads of torque - yes, but it takes revs to translate that into MPH increase. It's only got that torque for a split second then you are forced to change gear AGAIN.

EDIT: A near 300bhp tubby is looking at 4.6-4.8 0-60 and a top speed of the rev limiter, so nearly 170mph. At what point during the onslaught of 2nd, 3rd, then 4th to 130mph do you think the Diesel will come sailing past??

Dreamworld!!

I'm not so sure... Granted 0-60 i wouldnt think twice that my tubby would beat a 530d or 535 to 60, but if rolling at 30 0r even 50 then i wouldnt definitly put my money there. As to dreamworld, have you driven a modern performance car? I think my MR2 is a very nice motor, but at the same time do appreciate the technology is quite old now and that there are a lot (and i do mean a lot) of cars about that may be as quick if not faster than a lot of mr2's. There are plenty of cars around that are faster, better looking, more comfortable, more econimical etc etc, but i do love my '2 and although through slightly rose tinted specs i did buy a tubby because there are so many aspects to owning one i love - not just the it does 0-60 in blah blah blah or whatever. I'm happy to admit there are faster machines out there, unfortunatley some are suprising!

Firstly I have driven MANY modern cars.

As for you asking "have you driven many modern sportscars" we are not talking about sportscars are we? DIESEL BMW's dude!!

Secondly, 280bhp and 1260kg's is 280bhp and 1260kg's whether it was made in 1992 or 2007. It's weight, a force to push it, and resistence to hold it back. And 500nm and 235bhp is NOT going to show a clean pair of heels to a (what are we talking about now) 260+bhp MR2 Turbo, unless the MR2 is out the power.

A voice of sense. Thank you!

Obviously because I own both, my opinion counts for not a lot! I've got a 320bhp tubby and a 535d. Aside from 0-60, the 535d is quicker in every way.

yours is tuned though, so it all goes out the window. Anything can be tuned up and made faster, obviously? ](*,)

Not as suprised as I was mate. I was side by side with him and started to pull forward, but I had a fair few lb/ft more torque than him.

Off the mark, he'd have done me, not question!

I tell you from my experience, my Tubby will beat most things easily from a roll on, so I rarely change gear. On the odd occassion I have rolled on with something with torque, and lost due to being in the wrong gear. If it was done again in the right gear you never know what will happen.

Road roll-ons are always dodgy, I doubt very much that an M5 owner will be singing up at 6500rpm+ to dispatch a 535diesel. Probably just rolled on in top like I tend to when I want to pull a quick 50yards over most of the other traffic on the road.

Yes the DMS is very fast. But let's not forget the original poster refers to the 530d not even the 535d. I still think a 530d should be dispatched.

Tuned (even factory tuned) cars are quick, and the DMS is very quick. Not M5 quick though - sorry.

e60 M5 quick, no. e46 M5 quick, yes.

I'll tell you what, when you've actually been in the situation, come back to me :)

There's a difference between "on paper" and "real world" i guess.

"..in the situation" ??

you mean pi$$ing past diesel BMW's?

That's an everyday experience matey. Every single day. How extremely patronising! After owning over 40 cars, 3 of them turbo MR2's, and driving over 25,000 miles a year for the last decade, obviously commenting in the "driving experiences" section is something I shouldn't do until more experienced!!

Poster is talking about 530d remember.

Oh I know! That's why I still have my '2 purely for the fun of it. It's not a turbo anymore, it's a V6SC, but that's even better. The punch out of the corners is superb. Love it

luthor1 - I see a lot of words from you in many different threads, you talk a good tale.

When do we get to see some evidence of this amazing MR2 of yours?

Bilstein Yellow's all round, stock springs, mongoose, Apexi Cone Filter, Cusco strut braces, turbo timer, Solid top mounts

Yet you talk as though it's some monster that can destroy everything on the road, have you missed the other £10k of mods off your list or do you live somewhere odd that hasn't opened it's gates to cars made since 1995?
