I don't actually know what a PFC can do so it's hard for me to answer.
I guess the limits might be if you wanted to control some new aux device that the PFC may be able to deal with but the stock ECU will have no code for and no spare I/O pins to control it.
However, the ROM board can be configured to decode extra ports so it would be possible to have 3 or 4 port outputs(CMOS logic level) that could be fed to another PCB to maybe switch an extra VSV or drive a boost controller.
Otherwise I would expect the stock ECU to have the edge because of the myriad of little maps it has that are specifically tailored to the 3SGTE engine.
The downside here is that no one will probably ever touch them as there are so many!
eg there's over a dozen coolant correction tables and dozens more coolant threshold tests.
Dozens of speed sensor tests(nearly all at slow urban or car park speeds) and even more rpm and TPS based tests which you won't get on a PFC.
Maybe the biggest downside will be my tuning interface.It will be quite basic to begin with and won't allow real time remapping.
All maps would have to be edited offline and uploaded in one go.
However, there is sufficient hardware on the board to allow real time remapping in the future.But I'd have to write the code for that.
The good news is that it would just be a reflash to upgrade to real time tuning so no need to return the ECU for upgrades.
I've done a real time tuning GUI for the mk1 MR2 but I don't know how it compares to the PFC GUI for example.
