What paint are u using for your cam cover?

Post by karammander »

as the title says?

i used hammerite previously and found after a while it became very soft, then i was told that an undercoat of hight temp matt paint followed by regular car paint would do the job? is this true.

it's worked on mine. I'm not even sure if it has the high temp paint undercoat as the PO did the work, but it has remained shiney and hard all the time I've owned it.

Got some foliatech high temp laquer fromDemon Thieves (Tweeks), it's probably available from Halfrauds as well. Not bad stuff but it does chip easily. If I was to do it again I'd probably get them powder coated.

Normal paint will not last, it must be high temperatue paint if its going to last, ive tried alsorts and the best so far is halfords high temperature brush on paint, tho you can put it into a compressor fed spray gun with some thiners.

I had a load of stuff powder coated on my rev 2 engine and it still chipped and it was a good job aswell, catching it when working on it, dropping engine etc soon takes it toll.

When i fitted my rev 3 engine i handpainted it with halfords high temperature and havent had any problems with it at all and it was cheap, the exhaust manifold sheild takes abeating of heat, i tried another type of paint and it melted of and just dripped everywhere!!

I had both of mine powder coated. You can get powder coat very very close to the car colour if needed.

Mine and a few others i've done for amico`s are in Aircraft engine bay spec heat resistant epoxy paint, seems ok, mine done about 10k and a few tracks and rollers sessions with no peel or softness, and i think the others i've had done have been ok, well i've had no complaints!

POR-15 I think was what I painted the block on the kit car and the Escort with. Comes in a range of colours.. high temp resistant (but obviously dont paint your exhaust with it!).

Might not be a MR2, but i dont think that matters in this case...

I've got my cover painted with the normal car paint i've used on the car itself aswell...

it's been on for more then a year and somewhere around 10k miles now and still looks good and doenst fade at all...

my mate has just painted his cam cover with normal car paint. He reckons that the cam cover doesn't really get that hot. No hotter then an exterior panel on a really hot day.

That's it... probably wont get hotter then about 70°C

a good quality car paint would be able to stand that temperature...

wouldn't go and spray it myself with halfords paint tho...

Did he spray it himself, or with proffessional gear?
