Post by JAY JAY »

NEWBIE HERE! OWN A CIVIC COUPE, SELLING IT FOR A T-BAR MR2(94 UPWARDS)! BUT SHOULD I GET A TURBO OR NOT.
IF I WAS TO GET A MR2 GT ,WOULD I REGRET NOT BUYING A TURBO? AND WILL THE INSURANCE BOTTLE ME COMPARED TO A NON TURBO?
DO YOU HAVE TO SPEND MORE MONEY REPLACING AND KEEPING THE TURBO TIP TOP?? YOU COULD SPEND A LOT OF MONEY GETTING IT RIGHT BUT I DONT WANT TO SPEND-JUST USE,?
I AM WORRIED THE TURBO VERSION WILL BE DOUBLE INSURANCE, DOUBLE PETROL AND £££££ TO KEEP THE TURBO UP AND RUNNING.AND IF IT BLOWS..... WILL IT COST?? DO THEY BLOW OFTEN?? PLUS HOW WOULD IT HANDLE IN TOWN TRAFFIC EVERY DAY? ALSO BEING AN IMPORT WHAT PROBLEMS WOULD THIS CAUSE? NEVER DROVE A TURBO CAR AND THE MR2 GT T BAR IS STILL A MOVE UP FOR ME!!!! PLEASE MR2 OWNERS GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. IS THE TURBO A LOT TO TAKE ON (MONEY AND HASSLE WISE) OR IS IT THE SMART CHOICE?? 25-EDINBURGH-PARKED IN DRIVE- 1 YR NOCLAIMS- YR OF MODEL 94-99- TOO SCARED TO BUY AN OLDER CAR!! COULD I DRIFT AND BURN WITH A MR2GT? HELP!!!!!!!! ](*,)

Depends on your budget mate. If you have loads to spend then go for a tubby. Insurance is higher, mpg is less and maintenance costs are....well I guess it depends how you drive the car......
if you bought a N/A car you'd sell it easy enough in a few years time if you wanna uprate to a tubby....

It depends on whether or not the N/A would suffice power-wise for your needs and expectations. There are many people on here who have N/As, and are more than happy with them.

Hell yeah! How much you're willing to pay on the insurance depends on how much you want to drive the car! I pay a small fortune (even at 31) to insure my tubby, but this is all part-and-parcel of owning a car like that.

It depends on how the previous owners either looked after the car and engine, and how much you would do the same. Abuse any car, and she'll punish you financially... :) Service intervals are more frequent for the tubby.

Again, if correctly looked-after and serviced regularly, you won't have any problems.

JAY JAY wrote:DO THEY BLOW OFTEN??

Not if you don't abuse them (I'm assuming you're talking about the actual turbocharger unit). Skip a couple of oil changes and start whacking up the boost, and it will blow.

JAY JAY wrote:PLUS HOW WOULD IT HANDLE IN TOWN TRAFFIC EVERY DAY?

No problemo. Obviously not as good as an automatic Lexus, though. :)

JAY JAY wrote:ALSO BEING AN IMPORT WHAT PROBLEMS WOULD THIS CAUSE?

None really, it depends on where you take the car to be repaired/serviced. Many places view the MR2 Turbo as a UK MR2 with a Celica GT4 engine in, whilst others will just stand there sucking air through their teeth and saying "Well...it's an import, y'know...".
The only problem I've had with owning an import has been waiting a few days longer for certain body panels that differ from the UK model in a repair situation.

Understandable. Being mid-engined and turbocharged can sometimes make for an unpredictable beastie to drive in certain conditions. Maybe another MR2 owner local to you could take you out for a spin somewhere quiet?

What do you mean by this?

Oh, and lastly: turn yer damn CAPS LOCK key off, and welcome to IMOC! :D

yea tbh I would start off with an n/a, get used to the way they handle and drive, (especially in the wet), and then once you have some no claims get a tubby... !! Thats my route, the gt's are fairy nippy anyways compared to your civic!

Mr2's aint so good for drifting as they are mid engined... if you want to drift get something front engine rear wheel drive.

It's FAIR mate, more fun from the car, then pay more! You should expect to raise the maintence fee on keeping a tubby, however you would find a BIG difference between driving a CIVIC and a MR2 Tubby!
The reason I go for a NA is I can't afford the insurance. Import and Tubby cars cost much much more on insurance than NA cars. I am now paying 700pounds for my UK rev3 NA(Fully Comp.), I made some quotes with my insurance company, I have to pay 2 grand if I went for a Tubby! :-&
