Folding mirrors

Post by GIJOE90 »

Hi folks

I have a 1993 Rev 3 GT turbo. It seems that the mirrors are the manual folding type. Would it be possible to install motorised ones fairly simply, i.e plug and play??

The GT model should have had these, as well as half leather, steering fogs etc...

The GTS is the poverty spec car where you have to manually fold your mirror in!!

Should be simple enough to switch - obviously sourcing the motorised mirros is forst, and you may well need a door consol with the retract mirror button.

As for wiring, most manufacturers will have made the wiring loom to include all the connections for the extra features even in base model cars, as it would probably cost more to design and make multiple wiring looms.

Dunno if MR T adopted this approach though??

mirrors and switch are easy enough to find, I've a set of celica ST185 electrically retracting mirrors in the garage. the hard part is the relay that goes with them, as that's often forgotten bythe person removing the mirrors.

Without those, it's a pain to get them working. Not impossible, just a bit of a pain.

Thanks for the replys :)

Mine is the GT spec. It has steering fogs, leather/suede seats, it also has the retract button for the mirrors. I just presumed that they were the folding ones as they don't have any resistance when you manually fold them (just make a single click sound, not a grinding sound).

Mine has the folding mirrors (GT spec), but they work about once in 5 tries! They also don't have any resistance when you fold them manually. If yours is a GT it will have the electrically folding ones, I just don't have a clue how to fix them! If anyone ever figures it out, i'd be gratefull too! :D

Ahem! I rather view the GT-S as the slimmed-down, purer, lightweight version of the two turbo models.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Best way is to see if you're getting current at the wiring plug into the mirrors and if you are, then to whip the actual mirror out of the housing to see if there's still a motor in there! I think the motor mechanisms are similar/same across the Toyota range (similar model years) and they are quite easy to replace.

If you come across a relay for a pair of ST185 Celica mirrors in your searches, let me know!!
