Cambelt replacement quote

Post by Soupasam »

I went to my local MR.T today to get a quote for replacing the cambelt. I bought the car a few weeks back and would like to get it done to be on the safe side (last one was replaced in Feb 1999 at around 44000 miles and the car is now on 63000). The dealer I went to was Platinum Toyota in Bath.

I was quoted £180 inc vat. :?

I did ask them about a loyalty policy for cars over 10 years old which they didn't seem to know much about but decided on 5% discount.:-k

Is this a good price?

is that including parts?

give paul woods a shout over at twobrutal iv heard he could do them for a decent price and his works always top notch.

Toyota do have a habbit of over charging. and iv heard of many they dont really have a clue, they should stick to servicing yaris's!

£180 isnt that bad from a dealer, some will charge you double that. Its abit of a pig to do if u havnt done one before. I believe paul can do one in under an hour.

Also, the cambelt isn't such a worry on a 4age as other engines as the pistons can't contact the valves if it snaps. So I understand.

I have a TDI golf, that hasn't been changed for a good 90k miles and I worry even time I drive it :) luckily it only has to last another 4 of 5 weeks prior to scrapping.

:( Durham is too far away for me. I may as well spend the extra and get it done at my local MR.T and save on petrol and a whole day of travelling. Has anyone else had theirs done recently?

The parts aren't mega expensive (even genuine toyota), surely any local independant garage could do it for you? On a car of this age it doesn't really warrant main dealer attention; last time I had one done I got charged 2 hrs labour. HTH

I had mine done in November at my local Mr T. They run the loyalty discount scheme where if your car is over 10 years old you receive 30% off labour and if your car is a Toyota 10% off parts.

The total cost was £128.29 (including discount) which I was well pleased with. I also had a 'C' service and a coolant change, so the total bill was a lot higher than that. £180 inc VAT doesn't seem OTT to me though for peace of mind. It seems it depends who your local Mr T is whether the loyalty discount applies. Try calling other Mr T's in your area as prices seem to vary from branch to branch.

Handy info -regarding the loyalty discount scheme, I'll have to ask my local dealership whether or not they partake :)

Also try giving 3S sevice centre a call or PM (an affiliate on here). They're not that far from you...
In fact: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/profile.ph ... ile&u=3059
Their website is also given there. They're in Hook (Hants)...

£180 inc parts seems damn reasonable for a toyota garage! Seeing as i was quoted somewhere in the regoin of £120 for parts for a starlet camblet kit alone! (belt and 2 tensioners) Or was that quote only for the belt (about 30 quid i think).

Can you not get a small local garage to do the job for you?

Starlet tensioner sounds about the same price as the 4age one, but I would guess that the £180 does not include the tensioner.

If your too far away from Paul's why not look in yellow pages for a mobile mechanic, any decent mechanic should be able to put a belt on, its not rocket science, just get a quote first. Jinxy

Reading this almost made me cry. Just before xmas I sold my MR2 and bought a 2.0 litre Alfa 147. Just had the cambelt changed at an independent Alfa specialist (i.e. NOT a main dealer). The price? Including all the associated belts and ancillaries plus a cam variator, £612. Ouch.

Gotta find me the Alfa equivalent of Mr. Woods!

After reading through the MK1 Club repair article on replacing a cambelt I think I may do it myself. Depends on how much a Cambelt and tensioner will cost me. Is it worth going for a proper Toyota jobby?
