aftermarket steering wheel and boss/hub
hi all, want to change my steering wheel but don't want to spent too much.
Looking on ebay for a decent wheel isn't a problem, what do i need to know about the boss/hub? not a clue! thanks

depends on the wheel you get, there are some universal ones.
Check in demon tweeks or grand prix racewear

Best Boss is the MOMO one.
Most
(decent) aftermarket steeringwheels will bolt up to the boss no problem.


Reckon you are looking at
£80 plus for a decent wheel then
£35ish
(its been a few years since i got mine) for the boss.

Most seem to go for Momo, but in the tradition of doing things a bit differently.

i got a really nice mountney wheel
(black leather with alloy spokes) only cost me
£50 and they do the boss for it too, i paid
£20 for that.
went to my local autohaus.

I had a lovely 320mm Momo Corse wheel in my supercharger.






Haven't decided yet if I'll sell the wheel, but the boss is now surplus to requirements.
It's a universal fit one, can't remember how much it cost
- about
£30 from Halfords, I think.
I'll sell it for
£20
+ postage, if anyone wants it.

That Mountney wheel looks really nice for the price
- I probably would have bought that rather than the Momo
(which was significantly more expensive!) had I seen it at the time.

Hmm, to me that wheel looks more like it belongs in something from the
'60s than an MR2, but each to their own.


That boss is probably ok; if you're in any doubt contact the seller and make sure it's ok to return it if it doesn't fit.

As Lauren said above.

I had a mountney boss and wheel on when I bought the car.
It was all fine except the wheel was far too small for my liking.
So I put on a stock wheel until I got a Momo wheel.

Last year I bough a boss off ebay where the seller stated it would fit the MK1 with no problems.
I had all sorts of problems that meant a fair bit of modification and wiring to get the horn to work and the indicators did self-cancel.
So I chucked it in the bin after I bought a Momo boss
(specifically for the MK1) and another Momo wheel.

We have also tried a universal boss on Tango which doesn't cancel the indicators properly.

Rather pay the extra
£10 or
£20 and get something that actually works as intended

Well, you can buy my spare boss with confidence: fit and function on my UK-based Mk1 were identical to that of the genuine Momo boss on my other SC back in NZ i.e.
no modifications required and no problems with indicator cancelling.

ah, i didn't realise that other boss's other than momo could cause problems.

Yup still interested, whats the make of the boss then? and can i stick any after market steering wheel to it? i.e momo/sparco? does it come with all the fitments etc.

- sorry I've taken a while to reply!
If you're still interested I still have the boss.
I bought it from Halfords where the guy told me it was a Mountney, but I can't see any markings on it.
It should fit pretty much any aftermarket wheel; it certainly did the job with my Momo Corse, and I had no problems with indicators failing to cancel.


As for
"fitments", there are none; screws to attach the wheel to the boss should come with the wheel
(if not, they're readily available), and you use the car's original nut to attach the boss to the steering column.

I changed my steering wheel to an OMP one I got fro peanuts from ebay.

Probably the single best modification I've done to the car.
Feels wrong driving a mk1 with the standard wheel now!

Anyhoo.

Recommended strongly.

I'm looking to buy a new wheel and wondered should i buy the sam esize or smaller? 320mm?

320mm is a bit small IMO.

Personally I like the 320mm wheel
(same size as in an Elise, BTW).
Really enhances the
'go-kart' driving experience.
Although, I have to admit that it makes for a good biceps workout at parking speeds
- especially with 205s on the front!

The 320mm Momo Corse I had in one of my cars was slightly offset upwards, which meant I had no problems with instrument visibility.
A wheel of that size
(or smaller) that isn't offset will, unless you're really short, partially obscure the tops of the tacho and speedo dials, which is the problem I had with my other MR2.
