did you check to see if either wheel is buckled? I have the exact same prob with mine - took the wheel off the front and you can see a buckle from the inside of my drivers wheel. Quite easy to spot. Dont know what I am going to do abt it as the alloys are 'ACE' and I cant find a replacement anywhere!
Wheels are brand new, about a month old. Ive recently replaced the trackrod end on the drivers side passenger looks OK. Steering rack is the next option after the top mounts. Ill also check the inner ball joints as well.
Sean how much was the steering rack, there is a place by me that will be able to refurbish it. They don't think the problem is coming from the rack though.
Easy way to tell, go and jack the car up and wiggle the wheel at the quarter to nine position quickly and firmly and see if you can feel any play. Do both sides.

I think Ive found the problem. Just had the MOT and discovered that the passenger side track rod was loose. Don't know if its damaged at all, or if it wasn't done up properly after the recent alignment. At least its not the rack that passed fine.
Tightening the track rod has done no good, problem is still there. It feels like its through the steering column. Been to my local steering rack refurbers and they say that it shows none of the symptoms of a knacked rack, i.e. only feel it at 70+, can't feel it when bracking etc.
So back to square one. They did give me some ideas though. How do I check to see if the hub has been damaged? Also James how did you get off after changing the top mounts? Did it make a difference?
Got the top mounts replaced- still not sorted.
Have been advised by another garage that the plastic spacers on aftermarket alloys can cause this if they are not the correct size - getting this checked out tomorrow.

got the spacers changed for new ones - did not fix it!
Eventually got it sorted - replaced both front tyres with new ones - totally changed the cars handling
I have the exact same problem vibration over about 60mph its not balancing as I have had 3 sets of alloys on one were the originals and they have all been the same.
I even took it to she shop that supplied my alloys and asked them and they wanted to charge me £5 per wheel to balance them when they had just balanced them the week before
Ive been curious about this for a while. Ive got on mine bolts that adjust the camber all round. Could these affect the wheel alignment and therefore cause a vibration?

Last year i hit a piece of wood in the road, and i started to get a judder from the steering at around 60mph, I ended up with the conclusion that the front wheel was buckled (even though it wasn't visible) and i replaced the front wheels with a couple of standard mr2 wheels and the problem went away. Over that time i've tried to find a single replacement wheel for the 17" one that i thought was damaged. 12 months later and i got one! Driving home from the tyre place today with the new wheel back on and the judder has reappeared - GUTTED!!!
Can anyone suggest what else could be wrong which doesn't affect the car when i've got 15" wheels on the front, but it judders when i've got 17" wheels on? The front wheels have both had new tyres and been balanced today...

My moneys on the fact they're not balanced properly. Did they use a 5 stud plate or just of the spigot hole as usual?
Failing that have you spigot rings? Cheap tyres? Play in the steering arm?
Well hands up to cheap tyres, but the tyres on the other set of wheels were only Nankang things... As for 5 stud plate/spigot hole i dont even know what that means I agree that everything kind of points to the wheel as it was all ok with the other wheels on. I'm going to get the rear tyres replaced next week and get the wheels aligned too as there's a slight pull to one side at the moment so maybe i'll get them to check the balancing of the front wheels again too!
Hey guys, I had this prob only a month ago!!
I had play in my near side steering rack. but me being the cheapo , went to see if having my front balanced (17's) would help for awhile. as many of u have found it. it did sh*t all!!
So I finally got my mechanic to take a closer look, it looked like the steering rack was replaced awhile back but wasn't tighten!!! So i took my two out for a quick blast, the vibrations thru steering wheel were virtually gone but SOOOOO annoyed as it kicked back in after 70+ mph!!
My mate recommended to do my tracking/laser wheel alignment. Wanted to try anything at this point!! As many of you know. To my amazement!!!! it actually worked!
So I recommend EVERYONE who has similiar probs, check your steering racks (mine was shaking violently, thought i might end up with arithritis) & fork out for a 4 wheel laser alignment.

OK, this issue has been dead for a while, but im needing help. Had 2 mr2's mkII, first one had shaking steering wheel and wheel balancing sorted it out. Now im on my second, no shaking steering wheel but, drivers front wheel bearing needed replacing, and so did the hub. Now after the work(brand new bearing, second hand hub), shaking steering wheel again, so wheel balanced all 4 , and got the alignment done. Still at 60 shaking steering wheel, not as violent as it was just after the work but still there. Any suggestions as to what it maybe? or other things i should check?
Other things to check on this would be the ball joints and universal joint at the base of the steering column. The nuts aren't overtorqued are they?
