Petrol Smells after turning off engine

Post by ANT »

sometimes.. not all the time i seem to get a bit of a petrol smell around my car after turning it off :?

cant see any leaks or fluid under the car when left.

got the smell now at the moment.. literally just got in and parked it on my sloped drive, with a nearly full tank.

anyone else ever had this or know what may be causing it? just a tad worrying thats all :?

thanks

there was a patch of fluid on the floor when i moved my car off the drive this morning, i presume its petrol and also had a strong smell of petrol inside the car.

anyone know if there are any common places for it to leak petrol?

My brother (chriminator100) and i have noticed a petrol smell from the engine bay when stopped also....never been strong enough to fill the cab, but i assume this is normal. We have a speculation that the tubby might be running a little rich, in which case the unburnt fuel may be causing the smell. If you run a check on your fuel consumption, you may be able to tell if any is leaking out, although, if any was, im sure you'd notice it.

Try it, fill the tank up to full, get the size of the tank, and then see how many miles it takes to get to halfway. if you take it easy, you should (like us) get 34 mpg approx, whereas if you decide to stretch yer legs a little, expect around 16.

Of course if there is a leak, this figure will be much less, but like i said, its not probable, if its anywhere in the engine bay, you would probably have toasted it.

you may have one of those crappy filler neck inserts fitted (common on imports) it may be preventing the filler cap from sealing.

But to get the smell inside the car?!? do you have anything screwed into the centre tunnel? EG phone kit

Mine stinks of petrol after a drive, but only from the outside. Toyota reckon I have a knackered injector seal, but I dont know if the 2 would be related.

The lump between the drivers seat and the passenger seat.
This is actually where the petrol tank sits.

Useless carphone installers have been known to drill holes in it (and through the tank) when fitting carphone cradles
