Audi TT 225 Coupe

Post by cbaynes »

Hello,

Some of you may remember from back in the day, I used to own a Rev 3 N/A that I had to sell due to family commitent .. gutted is the only word I can only use, but hey we all have responsibilities :D

Any way after 2 years of driving a Fiesta and Vectra I found myself in a better situation to afford a better car, I really wanted another MR2 .. Rev 3+ Turbo, but I wanted something newer, hot hatch or coupe, test drove a Honda Civic Type R - This was good fun, but very basic inside, not many gadgets. Then a Seat Leon Cupra R 225, I liked this a lot and perfect to use when me the missus and Thomas go out instead of using her Golf .. but that was the problem, we had the Golf .. the Leon had all the interior similarities to her Golf ... Low and behold the Audi TT 225, I took it for a drive and thought this is it for me, low down, coupe and in my eyes, fast :D

So I bought one, :) and have now owned it or 2 months, the thing is I dont get the same excitement, feeling when I used to drive the MR2, and as bad as it sounds the Audi has only been cleaned once since I've had it .. while I was shopping in Tescos :? I used to religously clean the MR2, every weekend ... I think it's like a first love, always there in my heart as silly as it sounds LOL

Dont get me wrond the Audi is great fun and the build qulaity is superb, but I think the MR2 is definetly my favourite, I think because at the time (back in 2001) you never saw many Rev 3 MR2s ... the TT is like xxxx in a field, they're everywhere LOL

Anyway, thanks for reading I do pop in from time to time and nice to see some names that are still here :D

A lot of people go on about how great the Audi TT looks but for me personally, it's not all that nice. The front lights just don't go with that front grill. Agreed it probably is a well-built car and I've heard they're very fast with handling to match but I think the MR2 has much more character. Get back into MR2 ownership, you know you want to. LOL.

used to hate the tt's when they came out and although i wouldnt say they have grown on me they certainly are what most people would consider a 'desirable' car, quite like the new one though - much more aggresive looking

Fast? Not really when compared to the tubby

Handling? Again very disappointing ;)

Last time i drove a TT i'd driven a passat to it. The TT felt like a smaller passat and really disappointed me.

I'm quite happy with me Civic Type R though it's hard work if you want to motor on.

My best mate has a TT, and I quite like driving it. It's the 225 turbo and although it doesn't have that punch the tubby has, it's very civilised and extremely well built.

It does seem a little sanitised compared to the tubby, but "horses for courses" and all that.

Quite a nice car as a daily driver, but give me that big power punch in the back any day! (says he who's driving a Toyota Starlet at the moment  ).

Personally they aren't to my taste. If it wasn't for the Exhaust, wrong coloured lights and in most cases spoiler then it would be hard to tell if the car was going forwards or backwards. I just don't like cars that look like this (beetles etc).

Through what other people have told me i have found that even though the build quality is good the reliability is terrible. The dashboard going boobs up is a common fault and also the gearbox, suspension and rollbar's are a bit iffy. 2 people in my work own them, one got their rollbar sorted out under warranty and the other spent 1.5k having the gearbox sorted.

Here i am with my 14 year old Rev2 with no real grumbles. Certainly not the 1.5k variety anyway lol.

Good luck to you with your car though and i hope you don't have any of the troubles mentioned, or any troubles at all come to mention it. A car is an individual thing so its always each to their own.

I agree, the TT never looked right to me either. The new one however is a lot better, and according to EVO, a much better drivers' car.

The VAG 1.8T is detuned even at 225bhp. You can REVO chip these for £500 and get roughly 260lb ft/260bhp, making the torque curve nice and steep, instead of artifically flat. The engines are very strong.

I was looking to buy a Leon Cupra R, but I'm going to get a tubby.

Nowt wrong with the TT.
Nowt wrong with the 2.

Saw the new Audi TT on the road yesterday. Looks a whole lot more purposeful.

Much better attempt altogether. :thumleft:

I absolutely loved the TT when it first came out - with its classic design language - although with its popularity it has lost a bit of that apeal. Having said that, colour and wheels make a huge difference, the body design is still very good IMO.

I do really like the new shape, more similar to the A4 cabroilet in particular, which I think is very very nice.

Still, not quite as gorgeous as the '2 but then not many are

I went out in a 225 TT and it felt REALLY nice inside.
TBH though, it felt slow as sticky crap stuck on glue or something.

As for handling - the original ones were all re-called because they had a tendancy to land on the roof if you got excited in a bend!

IIRC the problem was that if you braked in a bend they tended to go onto snap oversteer. Nothing we'd ever put up with then...

B****y expensive though for what they are.
