Yokohama A022 tyres - opinions?

Post by ryan »

Just put my std 15" wheels on the car as i'm getting my 17" wheels refurbished. The tyres are almost new original spec Yoko A022 n/a rev2 tyres, so not sure if they are suited to the Turbo (were the same tyres recommended for the tubby as n/a?).
The car feels ok, and I can feel rear breakaway more easily (after a few laps around a deserted roundabout  , but the car seems to 'roll' a bit more in corners.
One thing is for sure; the ride is a bit more comfortable

The comfort and roll will be due to them not being low profile (15" compared to your usual 17").

You don't say what tyres you have on your on 17" wheels.

I thought Yokos were superb in the dry but not great in the wet, and in the wet they didn't give you much warning of when they were about to lose traction (although the warning you get may be better than compared to low profiles on your 17" wheels).

They were standard on UK NA rev5s, and I'm sure before that too.

I swore by my Yokos (for 100,000 miles!!) untill I went in my mates Subaru, he wanted to prove that Toyo proxys were the way forward. I know alot of people on here slate them but Im a converted man, this was the first year I could get out of the work car park in the snow and I find they generally handle better. But then I aint got the power of a tubby!

i had toyo poxies on the back of my rev3 turbo std 15" and they were xxxx. Changed them to the yoko a022 and they are fabby.

In the wet not soo hot but then I don't drive quick in the rain but in the dry they are really really confidence inspiring

Im on my second pair of Yokos A022 on the rear and Id definatly recommend them! No complaints at all. The car had pirellis on when I bought it and they were awfull, especially in the wet. The Yokos fill me with confidence but theres alwasy a limit. Just dont get too cockey in the wet!!!

The A022's were the Original MR2 Tyre, but unless they have changed the rubber formulation in the last 15 years and not changed the name - I expect more modern designs will be a better tyre - EG the Bridgestone SO3

I am running Bridgestone S03's on mine, the previous owner suggested to me that these were the best that he had found. He said that the Yokohamas tend to flake a bit, mainly due to the poor road surfaces in this country. I guess they dont have that problem in Japan. Anyway my S03's seem to be holding up fine and give me a good amount of grip. Just my optinion :D

Thanks guys for all the replies. Typical though, i've had these wheels on for 4 days and I get a blow out on the M50 - so my nearly new Yoko A022 is wrecked and they are 120 quid each! Just put a GT budget tyre (64 quid) on now as i'll be getting the 17's back next week, and i'll need 2 new tyres on them!
So after next week the 15" are for sale!

i bought the proxies because of reviews on the old imoc site and they were pish from the outset.

No lateral grip unless you abused them first,
surface changes in the rain were plain scary
under power the rear would wander all over the road and
turning into corners the back end would try and pass the front

Changed to the a022's and hey back to normal grippy behaviour. My experience only and I know loads of people rate the proxies, I don't however

A022s are fine in the dry, useless in the wet - tyre compound technologies have moved on a long way since they came out and were fitted as OEM to the Mk2

Go for S03s or Goodyear F1's if you're using 15" rims. As good in the dry as A-022s, but much better wet grip.

BenF, Is the wear ipmproved for these better tyres or do they wear just as fast?

The more grip, the softer the compound basically. They do last okay though. Have seen 10K out of a set but that included a few trackays.. ;)

They're the same tyre Tim :)

S-03s have excellent wet grip, and I used to get 10-12k miles out of a set of rears. I ended up moving to F1s though as I found the break-away of grip of the S-03s difficult to judge, and the F1s were more progressive even if they has less overall wet grip - but this meant I felt more comfortable knowing where I was with the tyres.

I bought a full new set of A022's, I tend to always go for original stock on the 15's. All I can say in short is 'Excellent in the dry, dangerous in the wet'.
