272 cam base (start point) timing

im gonna be fitting my 272 cams soon and just wanna know what a decent base timing would be to set them to. When i get them i will get them degreed up so i just need a figure... ie 106/104 etc etc.

Do they not come with a spec sheet telling you what they should be set at?

I was unsure of what to do with the cams on mine so just got the values at TDC, set the cams, and plonked the head on. Seems logical to me.

yes i work on the amount of lift @ TDC for cam timing..... never used a degree wheel to be honest!!!

You'll need the degree wheel to set true TDC.

Why?? as long as the motor is at TDC and i have the right figures i can set the timing just as accurately by using a dial gague and setting the lift at TDC surely??

I will give the cams to my engine guy who uses a degree wheel and what not to come up with the lift figures at TDC relevant to the desired cam timing.

Use a degree wheel mate ... it's the proper tool for the job. A few degrees makes a huge difference with cams.

I found with a staggered HKS combo, 272 in / 264 ex it can be well worth tinkering with the exhaust cam to bring the power on a little sooner!
