I read all the reviews about these cars being a deathtrap and that the back end slips out so easily

Feel for you mate, but this statement isn't true they are pussycats that handle fine. Myself and girlfriend also never had any issues over 4 years of MR2 ownership.

re: buying back as salvage - I did this in 2001 when my mk1 (supercharger) ended up under the side of a lorry which pulled out on me.

http://www.mr2sport.freeuk.com/crash.htm (Pictures)

I only had 3p+F+T so the ins company were not even interested in my scrap - they let me keep it for £66. It was a mint jap import 48k mile dark blue supercharger. I paid the money, kept the car and did an NA>Sc conversion and sold some bits, I ended up well in pocket. In my case the front end took the impact - the wings, suspension, bonnet and windscreen were gone but everything from the t-bars back was 100% untouched (inc rare late edition mk1 toys) so I was well pleased with the salvage price.

If you are fully comp however and it was YOUR fault (which is appears it is) then you may not be so lucky, you get your market value but they may want your car's remains. I was told (don't know if it's correct) that fully comp it's harder to buy back but 3FT it's virtually up to you (again if it was someone elses fault). Don't quote me on that - and feel free to put things straight if I'm spouting bs again. :)

Really feel for you mate. Got a whole load of deja vu reading that as exactly the same thing happened to me last year (owned the '2 for a month or so, then spun and crashed into barriers on a roundabout over the A14).

My damage didn't look as bad as yours but it was still a write-off.

Still, I'm up and running with another one with a very harsh lesson on MR2 handling under my belt (which stood me in good stead for driving through the boxing day snow last year!).

If you need any advice on going through the whole insurance palava just drop me a PM or ask on the boards (don't worry, you're not the only one to have done this!).

it doesn't look that bad, my last car looked worse than that when I bought it.

It needed loads of work, bumper, wings, bonnet, lights, plus the chassis rails were twisted which I didn't realise until I got it home.

I then asked my dads mate (who has been working in a bodyshop for over 30 years) to have a look at it. He said it needed a bonnet, bumper, radiator, light and wing and would take a few hours to fix and there was a AX GT at the local scrap yard. It saved me hundeds.

Yeah inspectors quote to get everything back to new condition with new parts. I bought a bandit 600 from a mate. He bought it back from the insurance company after someone reversed into it whilst it was parked up.
The cylinder block had a scratch on the fins & they quoted to replace the whole engine casing with new. Needless to say it was written off. He bought it back for a couple of hundred & all he had to do was put on a new clutch lever for it to be roadworthy again!

2 grand bike for a tenth the price and they paid out the 2 grand for him to replace it.

sorry to hear of your loss dude.

my five got written off when someone hit me from behind. They paid out £550 and it cost nothing to buy back the car as in £0 so i got a free car out of it. Still driving round with the cracked bumper.

Paul, mine was at fault and was fully comp. I bought the car back from the insurance for £250. So it is possible.

I was fully comp, accident was my fault and I tried everything to buy mine back as I wanted to sell the parts, but my insurance company were having none of it :(
I had a few people check my car over too, just to make sure I wasn't being lied to about the damage, but it turned out I had totally screwed it good and proper after hitting every side of the car. The list of damage was depressing. There was a few things I could have had off it though to sell that were perfect!

Here's the nicest view of mine. The side and rear pics are too depressing to post!

See the 2-brutal people, they are usually crying out for rear-clips!

Sorry to see a good one in bits
