They come in various shapes and sizes and vary in complexity, but all they do is detect detonation. Essential when your mapping an engine, on the road or the dyno.

If they dont I would run for the door!. Engine mapping is massively complicated, but essentially the idea is to run 12:1 AFR and as much boost and ignition advance as you can get away with before detonation occurs. The less fuel you run, the hotter the cylinder temps get, which causes detonation, the more boost you run, the more likely detonation is and the more advance you run the more detonation you get. In case your wondering detonation is v.bad for engines. Normal combustion is a steady burn of the charge, detonation happens when the combustion process becomes too harsh and multiple explosions occur at the same time. It actually generates more power but its so agressive that it can cause catastrophic engine failure pretty quickly. Most race cars actually run in det all of the time, but they dont usually have to last all that long

If anyone attempts to map an engine without wide band lambda and det cans they are absolutely insane!

Agree, a essential piece of tuners hardware. I think they consist of a mic that clamps to the engine, audio amp, and headphones that the tuner wears. cans=slang for headphones.

My first test run before my Unichip was even plugged in, was carefully monitored with det cans and a wideband lambda sensor, before my tuner would even touch it.

I have a permenantly fitted det gauge in my car. Probably one of the best bits of kit Ive had fitted. It detects even tiny amounts of det and let you know how serious it is. Excellent for changing ambient temperature. The tuner uses it along with det cans and a lamda sensor.

you got a pic of that mate? how does it give you a reading or is it just that it can tell if it is in det or not?
is this what is know as a knock meter or something completely different?

The one I have does not give you reading in that sense. It has a line of LEDs going from very light to heavy from green through yellow to red. It also gives an audible warning too. It looks similar to a Fuel/Air Gauge. It certainly helps you find your cars peak boost level for the prevailing conditions!

I wish I had it last year. I wouldnt have blown the last engine !!!

Hey llenrub or AM Tuning or anyone else, where did you get those knock alert instruments from and what was the price? I presume you wire them in series between the knock sensor and the ECU or something?

i bought mine second hand from the usa ,,, they come with there own knock sensor too

have u look at usa sites im sure u will find one
