bry which f1's did you get :?: ...and sizes :?:

To be honest I found the Falkens offered very little grip in the dry let alone the wet and they went bald in 4000miles
I've now got 245/35/17 and 215/40/17 Eagle F1 GSD3's hopefully I'll be impressed.

Yep the F1s are very good for the road.. but don't show them a circuit. I slightly prefer SO3s over F1s as they withstand heat better, on the road in the dry the SO3s have the edge, its the other way round in the wet.

i went from cheap nankangs to toyo's T1-r's. the nankangs are UTTER CRAP im comparison. im not sure what type they were but if it was raining i would not be able to pull out at a junction without spinning the back wheels.

the toyos are very good for the price and i havnt spun the rear wheels yet! in no pansy driver neither. for the price id say proxes are excellent.

I think to properly compare tyres, you must decide on what you are measuring them.

These are my departments:

Cost
Mileage
Grip in wet
Grip in dry
Ability to continue to perform through heating

Score each of these out of 10, the best tyre in your test getting 10 and the worst one getting 1 for each test and you will find some surprising results. Dont call a 10/10 cost+mileage tyre "a bad tyre" because it doesn't hold heat well on the track, that is totally absurd!!!! That's not what it is for!

The A539 by example is (IMHO) excellent. It is REALLY cheap, it lasts 15,000 miles, it grips in the wet and dry adequate to my car and ability and I can take it on a track. What more do I want?

For 99% of people, spend the money you save on buying cheap tyres on advanced handling training and you will go faster.

Not that I want to name drop or anything, but Tiff Needel gave my car an absolute pasting around Brunters last year with the F1's at MR2004. He did 7 laps and turned the traction control off. My tyres were just legal at the time. However I they hadn't melted/blistere/deteriorated (to the eye) in anyway afterwards, and believe me he did use them well!
Do you think the F1's apparent overheating on track use has become exaggerated? I did see a pic on here a while ago of some F1's that had been wrecked by track use, but i'm sure it was because they hadent been 'scrubbed' ie, were taken onto the track brand new?

7 laps isn't really enough to melt them.. a days use will though. I trashed mine in 5 laps of Spa, though that would equate to probably 12laps of bruntingthorpe. The sidewalls are made of jelly so it becomes a matter of running them at pretty high pressures which obviously makes them pretty hot.

My tyres weren't brand new when i took them out at Spa. Martin Holdens delaminated pretty quickly too, in fact it was quite worrying. The problem with F1s is they seem to wear unevenly over the tread width so you end up with highs and troughs across the tyre. I think its due to their design in that they have a single tread block that runs from the centre to the outside.

I can't comment about what they are like on the road, but the series i raced in had these on, though it was an RX8 not an MR2. Thought they were pretty good on track and nicely progressive wet and dry, though i wonder how much of this was due to the chassis of the car as it was very, very good.

Horses for courses. I've been an Eagle F1 fanboy for some time, and have always been impressed by their behaviour on the road - wet and dry. Unfortunately I can't comment on how they wear on the track as I've never tracked my tubby, so just take the word of those more experienced in this department.

I also drive very sensibly on the road, so have never had an issue with low-milage wear either. When my current set of F1 GSD3s wear out, I'll replace them with the same (or newer), but as I've only done about 500 miles on my F1s in about 11 months, it's going to be some time...! :D
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!
